I don’t like depressing, John Green, or very sci-fi. YA book recommendations?

YA book recommendations? I like Sarah Dessen, The Name of the Star, Miss Peregrine, etc. I don’t like depressing, John Green, or very sci-fi. Some paranormal okay, but not over the top. I like strong characters and contemporary writing.

Unwind series by Neal Shusterman is a favorite. It’s dystopian, but not really super sci fi ish.
The Hate U Give is this year’s most popular YA and it’s thoughtful contemporary fiction.
Rainbow Powell is a great YA writer who has several newish novels you would enjoy.

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh was excellent. I’m jealous of the YA readers now for the huge variety of subjects available to them compared to when I was that age!

I thought The Hazel Wood was a lot along the lines of Miss Peregrine. Super fast enjoyable read and I don’t generally like YA.

Definitely going to look up all these books!!! Curious – does anyone have suggestions for a YA that is not paranormal, but has a house as a strong character/presence in the book. Dark would be good. Plot twists welcome. Missing kids a bonus. Any or all elements, but not paranormal. How’s that for specific ?
