take a break? or..just don’t finish it? if I find myself fighting with a book and that doesn’t change even after reading something else.. then so be it. why wasting ur time with something?

If you’re not enjoying it i’d suggest pick up a next book, reading shouldn’t be a chore ?

That’s true but it’s a series and I don’t want to be a quitter with 150 pages left.

I used to make sure I finished a book but have realised now that life is too short to not enjoy your book. You have tried, move on ? x

The book is so juvenile even from this established author and it’s not bad it’s just a chore and I have 150 pages left.

That’s true it’s Rick Riordan and I loved Percy Jackson when I was 12 but I’m not 12 anymore and his writing is so juvenile.

Natasha

Life is too short honestly. Dump it.

Move on. Finding a good book is all about reading it at the right time. You may not like it now, but in two years it may really resonate with you.

I used to read this author when I was 12 and it’s so juvenile now and I already bought the other books in the series.

What book if you don’t mind me asking?

1
Kayla

Ah, so it probably would have resonated with you back then. I suggest donating them and giving a kid the chance to experience and enjoy them.

1
MadisonQuestion author

@Christina I’m reading Magnus Chase there was a time when I would have loved it and I want to love it so bad but I’m not 12 anymore.

2
MadisonQuestion author

@Kayla That’s true they are in new condition and haven’t really been touched.

1
Christina

Oh I love those 🙂 I’m 30 but I still love all the books by Rick Riordan.

2
MadisonQuestion author

@Christina I love his books too but it still feels a little juvenile and I have other books I want to read.

Personally ,and this is just me. I’ve never started a book and left it unfinished ,but have left it to one side if I didn’t like it at the time, and gone back to it.

I’m really struggling with Jo Nesbo’s Macbeth. I also don’t like ditching a book, but I think this one will be going on the “later” shelf. ?

Put in a bookmark and move onto something light that you know you’ll enjoy then try again, or if it’s really not for you ditch the bookmark and stick it on the ‘maybe someday’ shelf

It’s Magnus Chase and the writing is too juvenile for me,and I have 150 pages left and I’m using my good bookmark, and my light writing is always young adult romance I can’t stop reading them they get so cute.

Nathan

In that case I’d go with option 2, your good bookmark deserves a good book

If I get jaded by a book, I read something else for a while then try it again. Come back to it with fresh eyes.

Give it to someone else who may love it

In my experience, if you find a book too difficult (could be because it’s bad, or heavy or just not for you) you should abandon it. If you intend to come back to it, then you will when you’re ready. If the book isn’t meant for you, then no harm in accepting the fact and moving onto a book which is for you. Precious time is lost trying to decide whether to finish a book or not. Time that could be better utilized searching for and reading a new (more suited) book.

That’s true I just can’t seem to finish it and I have other books on my TBR list even though if I was a lot younger I would have loved it.

I never battle through a book. If I’m not enjoying it or getting it, especially if I have given it a really good try, I move on. There are too many amazing books out there to waste time forcing one down.

I’m stuck on a book also. Have been for one whole month. I normally read a book or two per week. Why I do not move on to one of the other 950 on my kindle is beyond me. This book is stopping me from wanting to read. I guess it is because I’m halfway through the stupid book and it is not a long book either.

Book riot has a podcast dedicated to questions like these. It’s called: Dear book nerd. I learnt last year it’s ok to give up on a book and start another. Definitely hard to do the first time.

Depends on why you find it hard to finish.
If you just don’t feel that it’s worth your time, then just let it go.
If you really would like to finish it and it’s gonna bug you if you don’t, try listening to the audiobook instead. You can put it at 1,5x speed and just fly through it while doing other stuff. That is how finished my last drag and I’m glad I saw it through to the end. 🙂
