I date a librarian. Highly, HIGHLY recommend. Not only do they read, but if you have a random question you’re just musing on, they look it up and tell you about it.

On Twitter! He drives a children’s bookmobile and does library and story time for day care centers in his area. (We are long distance for the moment.) Been together almost two years.

My partner reads rarely. Mostly plays video games. This is totally okay with me because he doesn’t distract my reading time when he’s playing. However we do discuss the books I’m reading and what’s happening in the games he is playing because generally they have a good story line as well 🙂

My husband doesn’t read because he has dyslexia and gets migranes. And we have a wonderful time together. He’s very intelligent also. You never know what you might miss out on.

Fe

Exactly the same in this house. My husband can read anything technical but give him a fiction book he gets the worst headaches going

1
Cassie

I’ve been listening to a lot of audio books and I think I’m gonna try and find something he might like and get him to try that. He often uses netflix while he does other things and I think he could listen to a book.

1
Fe

See I don’t get on with audio books that well. My husband liked the Terry Pratchett adaptation on sky, likes all the art work but he just can’t sit and read without getting stressed or a headache. Whereas I devour books average one a day, luckily both of our children are ‘readers’ they’re only 5 and 3 but love books, my youngest takes a book to bed to cuddle instead of a toy

0
Cassie

I have anxiety and a lot of problems sitting still and focusing. So I like audio books because I can listen and paint, crochet, clean, workout etc. It gives me the chance to focus my mind on one thing and then my body on another and that calms my anxiety. Not to mention sometimes (depending on the story) it’s like being told a bedtime story and that’s a nice fuzzy feeling to me.

0
Fe

@Cassie I can completely understand that feeling, just not my personal taste. I can’t go to sleep at night without reading for a little bit.

1
Kerri

Cassie Zehring me too! I love audio books. At 44 I finally gave them a real chance and now I am addicted. I listen on my phone with headphones. I am trying to find a good pair of wireless headphones. Have you any?

0
Cassie

@Kerri I do not have wireless headphones. I did some research looking for some mainly because it’s so loud in the gym I need big headphones and my corded ones are not ideal. Just haven’t had the extra money to purchase any

My husband does not read. He likes to joke that the only books he has ever finished were Pelican Brief and Buzz Said the Bee.

My fiancé likes to read a bit, but not to the extent that I do. He says he has a harder time these days keeping his concentration, but he always gets a few of his favorite biographies, autobiographies, history books for birthdays and Christmas and they keep him going all year. I’m strictly a fiction reader so we don’t talk much about books ?. But I can’t imagine being with anyone else.

TrishaQuestion author

Look, all. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing. & If you’re with someone that doesn’t read, I am happy you have someone. I am gay. I want someone I can go to bookstores with & be on the same vibe with & hold discussions. Someone intelligent & enjoys & understands what it means to be a book worm lol. I want someone like that to date, that’s all. Thats just me.

Joan

I get you!! Remember, I’m an old fart ?. Back in my 20s I went out with a few guys who would look at my walls of books and ask me if I’ve actually read any of them. No, buddy, I’ve got approximately 1200 books here just for decoration ?

2
TrishaQuestion author

@Joan Lol I mean, I admit. I have filler books. Books I just use to fill up my space bc I like the idea that I’m going to read them. But yea, I do read at least 1 to 2 books a week. I get it done lol. I know what you mean, though. Love this <3

1
Joan

You’ll be fine, she’s out there somewhere wondering where someone like you is at this moment too. And hopefully she doesn’t read garbage books ??

1
TrishaQuestion author

That’s the best comment in this entire dang thread lol.

My husband is a reader. I’ve dated both readers and non-readers.

In my experience the difference is being with a partner that respects your reading. Whether it’s buying you books or listening to you talk about them or whatever, it’s the attitude about your hobby that makes a good partner.

5
Reply
Neva

My husband was not a reader but he loved to buy books for me. He invariably bought something I had already read and paid full price for it. I eventually got him to stop.

1
H

The wish list function on Amazon helped with that for me. In the years before Amazon, I kept a list and before a holiday, I would write down two or three titles and tell him to surprise me. It worked.

1
Leslie

Story time:
I used to date a guy, and we really bonded over books. He bought me The Cheese Monkeys, which we both loved and bonded over. We had a terrible, horrible breakup. I sought vengeance by texting him a MAJOR SPOILER when the sequel came out a week after our breakup. ???

Oh you’ll find something! Together 8 years, married 6. He’s read 2-3 books (I think it was Hunger Games-so I guess 3), we still talk about books….it’s just me who actually talks. He pretends to listen

0
Petherick

That is the bigger picture. You might meet someone who is amazing but they might read very little or not at all ??‍♀️ There’s nothing to say that he might be influenced by you and actually start reading more though.

1
TrishaQuestion author

Its interesting how everybody is responding lol. Reading is such a big factor in my life, i don’t need to explain to others why i hold it at such importance in a partner. But yes, it is also a form of mutual respect if there are differences. If you have other things in common, thats great. Your situation is yours alone. But for me, i know what i like! Not to be taken so seriously though, just light humor.

While I’m glad that I see so many responses of happy marriages with someone who isn’t a reader, I totally get what you’re saying.

My husband and I have literally nothing in common. We are complete opposites. We have no shared hobbies. He likes golf, airsoft, motorbikes, action movies. I like staying home with the kids, and reading. It doesn’t affect us negatively at all. Him going out on his bike gives me time to read etc. When he is watching action movies on a night, I sit and read beside him.
Opposites attract after all x

My husband doesn’t read much.. but we still get along well.. aside from reading.. Things that clung us together was our love in music, games, and respect because of our differences in taste and preferences ? somehow the differences makes the relationship interesting and we learn more about the persons personality and just love them even though some of what they like seems silly or may not be my cup of tea.. like how he thinks reading is a bit boring.. and how i get bored with online games easily too (even though i get quite good at it) .. so yeah it all depends..
