Far future: Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee. Near future: Saturn Run by John Sanford and Ctein. Quick fun read: Old Mans War by John Scalzi. I second All Our Wrong Todays as being fantastic!
I really enjoyed Dark Matter by Blake Crouch. It is a multiverse story that asks you to evaluate the direction of your life. I don’t read much sci-fi, and I have a hunch that people who read more sci-fi than I do may not enjoy it as much.
Sleeping Giants. Just finished it and really like it. If you like more fantasy, try Kevin Hearne’s Iron Druid Chronicles (read them in order) or Benedict Jacka’s Alex Verus series.
There’s webseries called Sword and Laser devoted to scifi/fantasy books. They have an good reads discussion panel type book club going. I tried to follow along but work got in the way. Here’s their bookshelf. https://www.goodreads.com/group/bookshelf/4170-the-sword-and-laser
Jay Posey!!! He’s fairly newer (I want to say he debuted in like 2014ish) but he is brilliant. The Legends Of The Duskwalker was his first series, Three is the first book of it…and WOW. Loved it!! 5 out of 5 stars (which I rarely ever do!) I’m on the third and last book of that series now. He’s also got a new series going (that’s set in space) called Outriders that I haven’t tried yet. But I’m sure it’s awesome. 😀
Philip K. Dick books and short stories collections!!!! Do Android Dream of Eletric Sheep? (base for Blade Runner); The Man Of High Castle (base for the Amazon’s series)
Deepness in the Sky – Vernor Vinge. It’s one of the best hard sci-fi novels I’ve read, ever. It’s part of a series, technically, but it’s the best of the series and stands just fine on it’s own.
Ancillary Justice – Anne Leckie. First in a trilogy that I simply ADORE.
Both feature space, Deepness features aliens. Both are fantastic.
You know… Jules Verne wrote many many books, not just the few we are all familiar with. I know I’ve decided to find some more Jules Verne and some more Ellery Queen.
Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel or Normal by Warren Ellis
Sleeping Giants is great! Followed by the sequel, Waking Gods
I’m not sure what type of sci-fi you’re into, but All Our Wrong Todays by Elan Mastai is really good.
Far future: Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee. Near future: Saturn Run by John Sanford and Ctein. Quick fun read: Old Mans War by John Scalzi. I second All Our Wrong Todays as being fantastic!
Loved Ninefox Gamit and I have Saturn Run sitting on my shelf.
Raven Stratagem is also fantastic! (Second book of lee’s)
I’m on the wait list right now for Raven Stratagem from the library.
The Martian by Andy Weir
The first chapter of Weir’s upcoming novel, Artemis, is online. http://www.readitforward.com/longform/artemis/

Who are your fav Sci-fi authors?
I really enjoyed Dark Matter by Blake Crouch. It is a multiverse story that asks you to evaluate the direction of your life. I don’t read much sci-fi, and I have a hunch that people who read more sci-fi than I do may not enjoy it as much.
I have been wanting to read this for awhile actually.
Agreed. I loved it too.
Movie: Enemy Mine
Station 11!
We Are Legion (We Are Bob). Get the audio book, the performance is fantastic.
Adding: Winner: Audible’s Best of 2016 – Science Fiction
This has seriously been one of my favorite new sci-fi books, the sequel For We Are Many, just makes me want the author to write faster.
One more month until All These Worlds! I already set-up my pre-order.
If anyone is an Audible member, We Are Legion (We Are Bob) is currently on sale for $1.99
Me too ?
Sleeping Giants. Just finished it and really like it. If you like more fantasy, try Kevin Hearne’s Iron Druid Chronicles (read them in order) or Benedict Jacka’s Alex Verus series.
Dark Matter
Very good choice. I loved that book!!
Agree!
Just started it this morning!
The Martian!!! It is soooooo good.
I’ve read it six times. And listened to the audio book three times.
@Louise I just loved EVERYTHING about that book. The main character? I *might* have developed a bit of a crush on him. MIGHT
I *might* have as well.

What kind of sci-fi?
Any kind!? Some of these sound good so far. Though I wouldn’t mind some aliens and or space!?
Have you read the Ringworld series by Larry Niven?
Jay Posey!!! He’s fairly newer (I want to say he debuted in like 2014ish) but he is brilliant. The Legends Of The Duskwalker was his first series, Three is the first book of it…and WOW. The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell
Leviathan Wakes the basis for the series The Expanse. There is 6 books in the series. I have read them all and would recommend them.
OOh if we are recommending movies, then I vote for Ex Machina. Love that one. Excellent acting, just superb.

If you like classics, “War of the Worlds” was good and is a quick read.
You know… Jules Verne wrote many many books, not just the few we are all familiar with. I know I’ve decided to find some more Jules Verne and some more Ellery Queen.
Anything by Octavia Butler.
