No Angle by Penny Vincenzi, part of a trilogy
East of Eden…amazing. I know it is a stand alone, but sweeping and if you haven’t read it, you must!
These Is My Words…reminiscent of the love story of Scarlet and Rhett with grit and gumption. It is a trio.
The Kitchen House…such a fantastic story. Only a sequel with it.
The Poldark series…I haven’t made my way all the way through yet, but so good.
Ditto on East of Eden.
Just picked this up at Goodwill. Reviews look good and sounds wonderful but I haven’t delved into it yet. Looks like there are 2 in the series. First one is a good 778 pgs.

@Vinija The first two are SO GOOD.

I was just going to suggest this
Jennifer Donnelly’s Tea Rose trilogy
that was great
The thirteenth tale, mighty good.
The Sunne in Splendor. It will make you like Richard III. I just saw that you read some Phillipa Gregory. You would probably like Sunne in Splendor then. Also have you read any Elizabeth Chadwick? Her historical fiction is similar to Gregory’s and Penman’s.

I just ordered King Rat and Gaijin because I haven’t read them yet and they are part of his Asian saga! I missed those! Thankfully Thriftbooks has them for next to nothing. Have you read them?
@Leslie yes, I have. It’s all about the same family and the family business. King Rat is a WWII movie. Have you ever read A Town Like Alice? It’s also a WWII story. It’s a love story between a man from Australia in a woman from England who get caught up in the Japanese invasion and become prisoners of war in Thailand. And it follows them after the word what happens to them after the war after they get separated.
@Marscha and then see the ‘Town Like Alice’ with Bryan Brown in it.
I have seen the movie King Rat and have no doubt that I will enjoy the book. But I am surprised that Gaijin got away from me. It has been a long time since I read the saga.
Karen Van Drie Love it!! I’ve seen it several times. How about The Thornbirds? That movie has Bryan Brown also. Great book too.
The Thornbirds is a great book! And it was made into a wonderful miniseries!

London By Edmund Rutherfurd is a good read.
There are four fantastic books about the life of Josephine Bonaparte- wife of Napoleon. EXCELLENT
Ken Follett
An Intimate Look: Mary Todd LIncoln.
I am currently reading The Chronicles of Christoval Alvarez by Ann Swinfen. Set in Elizabethan England, there are, so far, 9 books in the series. The Oxford Medieval Mysteries series by the same author is also very good.
Pillars of the Earth, Jeffrey Archer Clifton Chrinicles, Outlander
I haven’t read them since I was a kid (and they are definitely NOT kids books) but The Emigrants, a four-book series by Vilhelm Moberg tells the story of Swedes coming to the U.S. in the 19th century.
The Travels of Jamie McPheeters…..won the Pulitzer Prize and deserved it. Fun, raucous, and just an amazing read.
I am currently listening to The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult. I’ve read posts that many here have difficulty with audio versions but this one is incredible – so much so that I think you may miss some nuances if you read the printed word instead of listening to the wonderfully narrators. It deals with WWII and the stories of one Concentration Camp survivor. If you’ve ever considered an audio book – I highly recommend this one!
Her books are a saga! 🙂 Love it.
How many storytellers do you think there were?
Oh my! Including Josef? What an excellent question! The book had so many levels. There are times I struggle with the audio books but this time it was such a treasure – the narrators were amazing. I think I might like to go back and read the book now and look for things I’ve missed! Do you count the Grandma as an adult and as Minka one storyteller, or two?
@Betty And, I finished it a bit ago… so bitter sweet. Couldn’t wait to see how the story resolved itself but then disappointed that it was over.
Shogun and Gaijin by Clavell
The Circle of Ceridwen and the rest of the 6 book saga by Octavia Randolph – amazingly written 9th Century Danes and Anglo-Saxons.

Would you consider a historical trilogy that in book three, the bloodline is book 3? Book 1 begins in 1890. Book 2, 1914. http://Www. Dianabaxternovels. Com. Check out reviews!!
Either of Ken Follett’s triology – The Century Triology or the Pillars of the Earth trilogy. Both great series.
Bregdan Chronicles by Ginny Dye. Civil war. At least 10 books so far
The Forsythe Saga
I’d recommend author Edward Rutherford who has written lovely thick hist fic novels about Russia, England, Ireland, Paris and New York.
l have read and enjoyed all but Paris, which is on my to read list http://www.edwardrutherfurd.com/edward-rutherfurd-books.html There is a trilogy of ones on Ireland. Great books. Really enjoyed London. And the others.
How about this standalone title about people being disappeared during the Stalin years: ‘Children of Arabat Street.’ Also, Robert Massie’s incredible biography of ‘Nicholas and Alexandria’ reads like historical fiction.
Any Michner? The Far Pavillions by M.M. Kaye? Old, but excellent.
‘Half a Yellow Sun’ is my favorite book of the last ten years! Historical fiction stand -alone. Also, how about ‘Homegoing?’
The Eagle series by Simon Scarrow or the Winter King series by Bernard Cornwall
The Heart’s Invisible Furies, Homegoing, Pachinko
James Clavell. Shogun. I have not read it, but have it on my TBR. I remember when this mini-series was on TV as a kid, my parents made sure we were home every night so they could watch it. (I think they usually made us go to bed before it was over each night it was on!) Back before VHS and DVD, TV Mini-Series were hot items.
Loved Shogun! As well as all of James Clavell’s Asian Saga. I believe there are six of them in all.
Here is an interesting link about Shogun. https://www.thevintagenews.com/2018/02/20/english-seaman-samurai/
Any of Conn Iggulden’s or Bernard Cornwell’s various series.
Stephen Pressfield is good too
First Man in Rome series also Here Be Dragons trilogy set in Wales
Bregdan Chronicles, the John jakes series starting with The Bastard.
Have you read Ken Follett’s trilogy? And many years ago I remember a series by R.F. Delderfield, a saga of an English family ; the Phillippa Gregory ‘ series of British Monarchy; and John Jakes’ series starting with North and South.
Delderfield novels are great – God is an Englishman is the first one – about the Swann Family –
Loved, loved, loved!
Steven Saylor
So you really like him?
Have you tried the one with Gordanious (spelling name wrong) the finder series? Those are awesome.
The Cazalet Chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard, The Passing Bells trilogy by Philip Rock, the very old Williamsburg novels by Elswyth Thane
The Toss of a Lemon by Padma Viswanathan
Seems if you’ve read A LOT of Historical Fiction is might have been helpful to list some of the common book titles so people don’t waste their time providing suggestions just to be met with a “Read It” response.
Seems like a waste of time for everyone. Just saying.
A Land Remembered about 3 generations of one family settling in Florida – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Land_Remembered

Centennial by James Michener
Or Sacajawea by Anna Lee Waldo
Any of James Michener’s books, really, but I especially enjoyed “Centennial”, “Texas”, and “The Source”.
Not sure they qualify as sagas, but Margaret George has several wonderful historical fiction novels about different real life historical figures, Henry VIII, Mary Scots, Helen of Troy, Cleopatra, etc. They are all really well researched and very long! Great reads!
Or Robert Harris’ Cicero trilogy, historically accurate from everything I’ve read
Must be ‘Outlander’ series.
Gone with the Wind
The Poldark series by Winston Graham. Haven’t read them, but I love the PBS series.
The Shardlake series by C.J.Sansom. Excellent novels set in Henry VIII’s England.

Loved this book. It’s actually part of a Trilogy.. #2. The third Is still in the works. The first is “Free Food for Millionaires “. Haven’t started it yet tho
The winds of war by Herman Wouk
One of my new favorites is the Vengeance Road series. Takes all of the fake glamour out of the wild west but stays true to the rebellious spirit, independence and survival instincts that are ingrained in the history of the west. And it is action packed. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23719270-vengeance-road

I’ve learned more world history through Ken Follett’s books than I learned in school.
So many times I’ve finished a book and said that’s how history should be taught!!!
Yes!
I liked the North and the South series by John Jakes.
Hanta Yo was really good, too. By Ruth Beebe Hill. Native American saga.

The Bregdan Chronicles, Clan of the Cave Bear
Grantchester
James Michener
London, by James Rutherford! He has several others that are also good, but London is the best!!
I really liked Paris too. 🙂
I found this series fun. “1632 ” is the initial novel in the best-selling[1] alternate history 1632 book series written by American historian, writer and editor Eric Flint published in 2001. The flagship novel kicked off a collaborative writing effort that has involved hundreds of contributors and dozens of authors. The premise involves a small American town of three thousand, sent back to May 1631, in an alternate Holy Roman Empire during the Thirty Years’ War.
I really enjoyed Prescott Pioneers by Karen Baney, and Carolina Rain by Nancy B. Brewer. I think both have 4 books in the series
Yes, Michener
Outlander, the bronze horseman
Ken Follett
Shayne Parkinson’s Mud and Gold series are amazing. A harsh reality of those times – I thoroughly enjoyed the series! If I am not mistaken she normally offers her first book for free and that is how I got ‘hooked’
I’ve been wanting to read the Poldark series after watching the screen version series on PBS.
Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough
Centennial by James A. Michener
I also liked his “Hawaii”
signature of All things by Elizabeth Gilbert, the weight of Ink by Rachel Kadish, any book by Sarah dunant
I like the Philippa Gregory books on the Tudors. There’s a book for each one of Henry viiith’s wives. They are all entertaining and quite historically accurate.
Agree. I’ve read a few and really like the pace of the narrative.
@Savita – Well off-subject: you have a beautiful name.
Thank you very much!
This isn’t a series but The Book of Night Women by Marlon James would fit the bill
The bronze horsemen series (its a trilogy)

The Kristin Lavransdatter trilogy.

I’m nearly finished the bronze horseman by paulina Simons. Beautiful story. It was recommended to me here.
Sharon Kay Penman writes amazing epic novels about medieval England and France. My favorite is “sunne in splendour” followed closely by the “when Christ and his saints slept” series
Diana Gabaldon Crosstitch (now named outlander )
Ken Follett Century Trilogy – the best! Also truly enjoyed the first 2 of the his Pillar of the Earth trilogy. I’m working on the third book now.
I haven’t watched the series but I am currently reading Game of Thrones and once u get over how many characters there are and u file them in order ?it’s actually a good story
@Lizel — I started to watch the series years ago but it was too gory for my taste. I hadn’t thought about trying the books. Thanks for the idea Lizel.
@Julie I have to say from what I have heard the film is very hectic. Although there are battles and a few gruesome things – it’s left to the readers imagination which I like – rather than watching blood spurting etc ?
I’ve only read Pillars of the Earth but I loved it!!!!
I read four GOT books. I prefer the tv series—on DVD. I can skip the worst bits. What’s left is less gruesome to me than the books. Just my 2 cents. 😉
@Mari – thanks for the heads up!
Roberta Gellis. She was an historical fiction writer and wrote about England from 1022 through ou
Out the middle ages. I collected them & then read them back to back. Fascinating.
The Benjamin January series by Barbara Hambly
Troy trilogy by David Gemmell
Anyone for alternate histories? I’m listening to Farthing by Jo Walton and my next one is gonna be Roma Eterna by SF giant Robert Silverberg. My personal best is Fatherland, although 1984 might be considered AH by now. And there’s The Man in the Castle.
It depends upon what time. You are interested in I would suggest Massimo Manfredi for historical ancient Roman fiction
I loved Pachinko – historical Korea; brand new subject area for me.
I’ve just bought this! Looking forward to reading it 🙂
The cemetery of forgotten books by Carlos Ruiz Zafon is really really good, and a treasure for book lovers! Also, the fourth book will be published this autumn! Totally recommend 🙂
I strongly suggest that you get on Amazon and Search for R. Delderfield under books. Read the descriptions of his books. I read them many many years ago and loved them.
