Historical fiction is a favorite of mine…maybe the century trilogy by Ken Follett. Anything by Edward Rutherford.

I like mysteries, so when I first started reading for pleasure, I read Agatha Christie.

It’s not uncommon to learn something from a novel. I do it all the time.

I learn what it means to be a human being.

Think about it: when you read a novel that deals with a topic you don’t know anything or much about, you can learn a lot. I recently read an excellent book set in Denmark and Greenland – I learned a LOT about the culture of those two countries, not to mention a lot about snow and ice and icebergs.

What are your interests? I enjoy anything scifi, historical romance, murder mysteries, biographies, dystopian. I do not like horror. Give us an idea of what you want. ?

I love psychology and human behavior. Some of my favorite movies are gangster movies, silence of the lambs, hangover, due date, and then I also like movies that make me think. Not sure if this helps, but if I could find books like these movies I would be set!

Try reading Dean Koontz, intensity. It surly was! I also liked Stephen King’s The Stand. Both of those seem like books you may enjoy. Good luck!

Josh! Fiction is about humanity so should be interesting to do if you find the right novel.

Welcome to the wonderful world (s) of fiction!

Try Red Dragon. It’s the prequel (or sequel) I don’t remember, to Silence is the Lambs. It scared me so much it was the last creepy book I ever read.

Silence of the Lambs is a great book!! Try the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy slow at first but well worth it!!

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote – nonfiction that reads like a novel, so it might be a good bridge for you.
A Dark Adapted Eye by Ruth Rendell (aka Barbara Vine).
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larson.
Donald Westlake’s Dortmunder series, about a gang of hapless crooks, are great stories that will keep you laughing, too.

I would say, amble around in a library and read a page here and there to see what appeals.

Lisa Genova – she is a neuroscientist who writes VERY good fiction. Her first book was Still Alice, which explores/explains Alzheimer’s. In her latest novel, Every Note Played, the main character is a pianist who suffers from ALS. Through Genova’s well-developed characters, we learn a lot about the disease as well as its emotional toll on the patient as well as his family and caregivers. Her books provide a good transition from nonfiction to fiction because you learn while caring about the subjects.

I would say start with historical fiction and if you enjoy those then move to other fiction novels.
