I watched the film a couple of nights ago and loved it. It stuck religiously to the book and I loved it for that. The main 3 characters played their parts well. You must watch it!!

One of my favorites. It starts off a little slow but it builds into a great story…so keep reading if you struggle with the first few chapters.

It does start slow and there’s a lot of lighthouse technicality going on that I found myself skipping, but the moral dilemma the book presents is quite heartbreaking and you’ll find true sympathies with all the characters, although I did struggle a bit with Isabel. My heart broke for Tom though. I watched the film 2 nights ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s one of the few books filmed that sticks religiously to the book!

I don’t cry in books very often but I did in this one. Beautiful, thought provoking and still one of my favourites till this day. Reignited my passion for reading again.

It’s a beautiful book. So very sad. Fantastic descriptions of a life spent by the ocean and the isolation of the lighthouse. Did that contribute to the choices made? Does living in an environment like that alter your perspective on what is conventionally right? Wonderful book – the film did it justice too, unusually!

SPOILER ALERT ……………………… I didn’t really think the isolation made any difference personally. Isabel set her cap at Tom from the very beginning and I accept that losing her babies made her need for a child stronger but I think she was very strongwilled and pretty selfish and poor Tom was an honourable, honest man who just wanted to make her happy and gave in to her stronger will even when he knew what they were doing was wrong and especially when they found out who the baby was. Then she was going to let him be hanged because he couldn’t live with his conscience and did the right thing.

It’s interesting that there are all these comments saying what a great book it is and only 2 “Mehs” and 1 OK. Shows you can’t please all the people all the time. On other threads about books it nearly always goes 50/50 or near enough.

I do tend to find I have the same taste in books as Brenda Nyman so that’s why I downloaded it – books are a very personal taste so never all going to agree!

I’m probably one of the only people that didn’t care for it. I just wanted to smack most of the characters. I thought it was melodramatic and emotionally manipulative, not authentic at all. I didn’t absolutely hate it, but wasn’t my cup of tea.

The only one I wanted to smack was Isabella, for being so selfish. I had a lot of sympathy for the other characters.

It’s the first book that has made me cry in a long time. Yes, I wanted to knock some sense into some characters but I want to do that in real life too!
