Night Shift is a short story collection, one of his earlier works, and shows a range of what he’s capable of. I would start there if you don’t want to commit to a novel right away.

Misert, Needful Things, or The Green Mile. I love the Dark Tower series, but it is very allegorical…”mature” rather than “vintage” King.

My first King book was It. An amazing read. All his books are intertwined he has Turley created his own personal horror universe.

Pet Semetary. It was the first one that I read. That also could be because the movie was filmed near where I lived at the time.

If you want to try Stephen King’s writing without the gore, try Joyland. A very good coming of age mystery set in an amusement park.

Salem’s Lot! I started with that one my freshman year of high school and really enjoyed it. I also really enjoyed Needful Things. He has a great writing style. He really understands people and lets you really get into the character’s heads. Whichever you choose I hope you enjoy it! Happy reading! ?

I am actually not a fan, I think the stories slow, hard to get through, and terribly boring. Every book that I have attempted has failed terribly but I know that my opinion of the books are rare.

I read his early stuff, but eventually he got too good at scaring me so I stopped reading them. However, I enjoyed The Dead Zone, Carrie, and Salem’s Lot before Night Shift did me in. (The story about the rats in the cellars was just too much for me to handle without nightmares.)

11/22/63 is my favorite King (so far) but it’s big. Carrie is good and was my first King. He has some good short stories out there too. Misery and Salems Lot (and IT, although I’m familiar with the story) are all on my list!
