I thought all authors publish books for money. ?

Patterson is market oriented, so sales indicate the number of people that value his books. He writes, and hires co-writers, that will write to the largest market.

Money is important no doubt but just for sales don’t hire some co author write a book and then release it under the Patterson brand . His new books lack good quality content compared to his earlier works

When he gets an idea about a book he hires someone to write it for him. He can afford to. I’ll admit, I’ve read a few of his most recent books, ie; Invisible & liked them, however his ideas are getting old. I loved his earlier books like Kiss the Girls, Along Came a Spider etc.

His old books particularly the Alex cross series was a classic one can’t hire someone else to write one’s own story

I just wish they would have stuck with Morgan Freeman playing Alex. Although with Freeman they didn’t include Alex’s family, but that didn’t bother me since Morgan Freeman is such a great actor.

I’m inside the industry. That’s not only true, it’s true of any and every major author. Ghostwriters are prevalent. Ever wonder why in the fiction genre the author’s name takes top billing over the book title? Because it’s rarely about the story and all about people that will buy James Patterson, JK Rowling, Steven King, Dean Koontz just because. It’s a bitter truth. They aren’t authors….they’re brands.

Yes definitely too many in a year and not as good as when he only did 2 a year

I was reading Along Came a Spider during my lunch break at work. One of my colleagues said to me that she refuses to buy any of his books as he hires a team of writers to write on his behalf. I’m assuming that James Patterson is now a brand as opposed to an individual so it’s the same as watching a Walt Disney movie where a recognised name is being used to sell a product.

I wonder about Danielle Steel & how she rolls those books out but no mention of coauthored??

1

Christina

I’ve wondered about that too. Every time I look she has a new book out.

0
KirkQuestion author

I haven’t read steel so can’t comment on the quality of her work but James is a real disappointment

1
Mary

She writes all her books and uses neither a ghost writer or co-writer. I haven’t read her books for a long time but what I remember they were basically the same model, just different settings/people.

1
Kimberley

I feel like he and Nora Roberts are now phoning a few in.

True about Nora Roberts. Her books are a yawn fest now…

Never got into any of his books

To each their own!❤️

0
Cade

I didn’t say it was bad, I just meant to say that he’s in it to provide a product, not to produce art. He’s pretty open about it.

1
Ruth

True. Now his wife writes. I think children’s books?

0
Barbara

I can’t really say that. The only thing I can say is that the last books are less brilliant than the first ones, but that is something I’ve noticed in other authors that write lots of books in a short time. More quantity, less quality

KirkQuestion author

Agartha Christie used to write many books but she always maintained quality

2
Ruth

Sure. We know what we’re getting. Call them my buffer books ?

1
Barbara

oh yes, but she’s the “queen”, another one in my opinion is Ian Fleming

1
Marie

I agree @Kirk, but she is a one in a million. Not everyone can be Agatha!

1
Ann

Me. Such short repetitive chapters

People get older and that doesn’t exclude authors. So much writing behind him and he still loves to write. Some may love his style and others may need to find new authors.

Trish

It’s my understanding that James Patterson hires other writers to write his book in his behalf.

1
Tamara

Maybe so. I have no idea. I haven’t read him in several years but did enjoy his books when I did read them.

0
KirkQuestion author

If he still loves to write then he should write the books himself like Sidney Sheldon Jeffrey archer agartha Christie etc age is not a factor when it comes to writing good content.

0
Tamara

Or don’t read him.

1
Will

did you say Stephen King?

No James Patterson

James Patterson gave a million to public libraries, a million to Indie bookstores (for repairs) , 1.75 Million to teachers for in classroom libraries and funds scholarships at 22 universities in 2017 alone. If he is writing just for money, he is writing to give it away. His net worth, according to Forbes is $88 million. That is only slightly more than his earning last year, so he must give away a lot.

I loved reading his earlier books, I don’t enjoy him much anymore, but I bought a couple of his children oriented books for my 8 year old grandson. I’m sure he will love them

I quit reading him years ago because that is exactly how I felt.

1

Crystal

Kinda and why is he always co-writing or is that just lately.

1
Reply
Leslie

It may be unfair, but my impression is that he “helps” other writers out and then slaps his name over theirs on the cover.

0
Crystal

Ok I was just wondering

0
Linda

I have only read a couple of his book, but my husband is a avid fan of his. He feels the same way.

Money to promote independent bookstores, to give lesser known authors an opportunity to publish a book, to encourage groups of children to read. Yes,I do.

1
Reply
David

Obviously. The same goes for Dean Koontz. Both just rehash the same story with different names and I’m never supporting them again.

2
Reply
Leslie

Don’t forget Dan Brown. I read The Da Vinci Code first and then Angels and Demons a while later and thought, wow, I just read the same book twice. He doesn’t even use different names, at least for the main character.

0
David

I disagree with Dan Brown. He is smart about it and obviously takes a great deal of time to find a unique twist. Brown’s work takes effort.

Patterson/Koontz literally just change the names of characters in the same story.

0
Theresa

Same with Danielle Steele. She used to be good, then she started pumping out so many books, they all started sounding exactly the same. It’s really disappointing.

I don’t like his books. They go from ‘oh this is a good orange’ to ‘AND IM BEING SHOT AT’ in like one sentence

He’s totally lost me as a reader. I’ve been around since he did his first books. Even the latest Woman’s Murder Club wasn’t worth the time.

2

Judy

I’ve only read a couple of his books, but I wasn’t impressed. The movies were better. Plus, I fail to see how ONE MAN can write so many books so fast.

0
Reply
Chris

He doesn’t. He is well known for using ghost writers. The industry has never been shy about that.

1
Bobbi

not one man anymore. he has someone writing for each series.

1
Kimberly

Sorry but his new books are not all that good. Seems like same story just different characters.

1

Holly

Well, he is getting older. Maybe he’s more focused on other things in life than great stories

Not just writing for the money but making money teaching others how to do so.

1

Mary

I quit reading when I found that he doesn’t write the book just takes the money and credit. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind coauthored books or collaborations but just put on the book “a Patterson approved” or something like that. And then the writer gets the majority of the money.

He has never been the greatest writer, and many of his books are bad, but some are okay… a commercial writer? I don’t know, but probably he is that.

1

Cordia

Can’t say but I’m a fan of most everything that’s released in his name. Can’t just drop the different bunch of series he has but that’s just me. He’s an author that I have a library overload of him in my home?.

I work at a library so I see what new books are coming in and we have at least one new Patterson book at all times. He takes up almost three shelves not including the book shots, which have their own spot near our circulation desk. I’m pretty sure the last books he actually wrote himself were his Daniel X and Maximum Ride series’.

Alex Cross as well.

0

@Richard Alex cross ended before Max Ride did. I was going by most recently completed.

Alex Cross is still going on. New one comes out next month. The last two entries where his entire family were abducted was fantastic.

They believe that cranking out more novels faster will give them more followers and more money. But, I personally have not been buying so many any more. These books come at you like a flood. I don’t have that much time to read.
