If you can’t get into it, read something else and go back to it, if again you can’t get into it, put it away, life is too short for rubbish books in my opinion!

I do the same thing I do with shows. I will read the first 3-5 chapters. If I can’t get into it I won’t read it

I find it really hard to give up on a book. Even if I fon’t like it. I think I’ve only given up on a book once or twice. But it depends on how long the book is. I try to finish at least the first half of the book.

Probably like 20 or 30 pages. If I don’t like it I have to move on. Too many books so little time.

Since I read for my own entertainment, if I am not entertained or intrigued within 25 pages or so, then I don’t buy it or return it to the library. Much like a tv show, if I am turned off within the first 5 minutes, “wait, it gets better!” seldom does it for me.

Depends on the length of each chapter and how bad it really is. If I’m really on the fence and the chapters are an average length, I’ll give it 5. If they are super short, I’ll give around 50 pages. If it’s really bad, I may stop after the first chapter (have only done that a couple of times so far).

Hmm, although I HATE giving up on a book my imagination has to be gripped within the first few pages or it, unfortunately, becomes a chore to read and I don’t enjoy it. Gutted ?

Our book club facilitator used this formula and it always made me chuckle: 100 pages minus your age, because the older you get the less time and patience you have for rotten books. ?

Lol, by that rule I will barely get past the table of contents!

I read about 10% o the book before I decide if it’s worth finishing.

I’m in the 50ish pages camp. But sometimes I’ll put a book down for a long time and come back to it and finish it out. Guess the mood has to be right for the material.

It has to grab me pretty quick but, that said, I will put it down & pick it up again, maybe in another week or so. I think sometimes it’s just my mood at the time.

I dont. I always try to read it all the way through. I’m a perfectionist so if I don’t read it all the way through then it bugs it me

Honestly, there’s been one or two where I can’t even finish the first chapter. I always thought it would be great to read the classics and such, but if you don’t like the book, just don’t read it.

The only classic I could read was Baourwolf, I KNOW I am spelling it wrong, but I’m m at a red light!

I’ve never read the full story, just the short version they teach you in English books. But it seemed nifty.

I usually give a book about 50 pages. If it hasn’t gripped me by then I move along.

I give a book 50 to 100 pages but if it full of foul language I stop before the 50 pages. There’s too many good books to read without bad language.

Since chapters have different lengths, it’s actually pages for me. I’ll give a book 50-70 pages. The main thing that has to grab me is a certain character. If I’m not fascinated with at least one character, and the plot is too predictable, I don’t waste my time on it.

2

Janette

It depends on the book. Some I know within paragraphs that it’s not worth my time. Others I can make it halfway through, but the average is about 3 chapters.

Depends on just how bad it is. If it’s just because I can’t focus, then I’ll put it down and come back and try again. But if it still isn’t holding my attention for whatever reason it goes to the giveaway stack. Usually a few chapters and I know I don’t want to waste what little time I have. It’s too precious for bad books when there are millions I want to read before I die. lol
