If you’d like to read some great true stories about country veterinarian life before sulpha drugs were invented, read All Creatures Great and Small. It’s the first book in a series by James Herriot and is terrific.

Also animal related – Gerald Durrell books. He was best friends with David Attenborough – one of BBC’s most famous biologists and presenters (you can’t miss his voice, you probably know his), but truth be told he was absolutely brilliant on his own. He even opened a zoo and sold his books to get funds for it. His books are fascinating, hilarious and just plain brilliant. Princess Diana once said that if you’re travelling by train, the best books to quicky make a fellow passenger think that you’re insane, is to read Durrell’s books, because you’ll be laughing out loud the whole time.

First, read every single James Herriot book every written.

Second, read his biography, “The Real James Herriot”, written by his son, James Wight. (His real name is James Alfred Wight).

Third, remember, after reading these, times and technology has changed, extremely. But bedside manner can be the same.

Fourth, start looking for the school you wish to attend, become totally familiar with their entrance requirements so nothing sneaks up on you.

Fifth, if you are near your chosen school, check out the offerings in the library.

Sixth, check out volunteer work with the Humane Society, or other animal protection agencies.
