David Sedaris is great but I would caution categorizing his latest, Calypso, as a comedy. There are funny portions but I thought overall it was much darker than his earlier books (understandable due to the subject matter).
I second that! Also, her book Furiously Happy is very funny. If you like audiobooks, they are both read by the author. I so admire her honesty about living with, and determination to overcome, depression. Her writing gives a voice to some serious topics that sometimes society can be uncomfortable discussing, and she is hilarious in sharing her own story.
@Barb totally agree with you! I am reading Furiously Happy now. It’s funny but serious at the same time. Love her husband, too – what a good sport and a supporting spouse!
I completely agree, it sounds like he does a great job putting up with her antics with a simple eye roll! I still giggle when I picture her behind him with the stuffed raccoon!!
Enslaved by Ducks by Bob Tarte…But Enough About Me by Jancee Dunn….Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris….Ali in Wonderland and Other Tall Tales by Ali Wentworth….Moo by Jane Smiley…Funny in Farsi: A Memoir of Growing Up Iranian in America by Firoozeh Dumas …Carry On, Jeeves by P G Wodehouse…My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell…Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon by Spider Robinson…Another Fine Myth by Robert Lynn Aspirin…Fired Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg…The Loved One by Evelyn Waugh…Emma by Jane Austin…Diary of a Public Radio Slave by Kerri Wood Thomson…Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding…
If you have been active in church life Just Shy of Harmony is laugh out loud funny. Good humored silliness about a church called Harmony and the quirky folks that worship there.
P. G. Wodehouse – Almost anything he wrote is good, but his best works are undoubtedly the Jeeves and Wooster novels and stories. Some of them are in the public domain and available at Project Gutenberg and LibriVox, such as “Right Ho, Jeeves” (my favorite Jeeves and Wooster novel) and “My Man Jeeves”. Other books I’d recommend are “The Inimitable Jeeves”, “Carry On, Jeeves” (containing five of the same stories as “My Man Jeeves”, so you can read it instead), “The Code of the Woosters”, “The Mating Season”, “Thank You, Jeeves”, and “Joy in the Morning” (or “Jeeves in the Morning”).
Diary of a Wimpy Kid – all of them. They are hilarious! Janet Evonovich Stephanie Pum series, especially the first few novels. The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
I like socio-politico satire & found 2016 Booker & National Bk Critics Circle winner Paul Beatty/ THE SELLOUT fine (probably influenced by seeing him do reading; laughing at his own writing early then weeping [with us] at end … . Won’t give away but o my: think president so missable even in Normal times. And ah way too self-indulgent haha of me to note but in autographing, he said “Kerry is my favorite name”).
And am looking forward to shortlisted 2018 Pulitzer/U.K. Women’s Prize — Elif Batuman/THE IDIOT [yes homage of sorts to 150 yrs ago].
A Walk in the Woods – Bill Bryson “A terribly misguided, and terribly funny tale of adventure…. The yarn is choke-on-your-coffee funny.” –The Washington Post
One of my favorite palate cleansers as another reader commented on books to read after reading a heavy, deep or depressing book, Wodehouse is wonderful!
I love the #1 Ladies Detective Agency series, set in Botswana. The stories and characters are both culturally insightful and funny, and they touch my heart as well. Always cheer me up; short books, too. You can start anywhere in the series, but I recommend starting with the first book for the maximum benefits. (I think there are 17 or 18 books.) You will find it hard to believe that a MAN is the author: Alexander McCall Smith. They feature the character Mma Precious Ramotswe, and her Assistant (whose shoes talk to her) and their families.
I think it was in HBO. I’ve listened to most of the series on audible. Helps me with the pronunciations. There are also three chapter books for younger readers.
ahhhhh: only got to #2 — CATCH-22! Only slightly less [ruefully] funny: more than once asked someone if knew that novel & said Yes — Named After the Saying. O dear.
If you want to learn while you laugh, Sarah Vowell’s ‘Assassination Vacation’, ‘The Partly Cloudy Patriot’, or ‘Lafayette in the Somewhat United States’.
“An Uncommon Reader” by Alan Bennett. I laughed until I wet my pants. The Queen is introduced to the power of books by the bookmobile serendipitously arriving at Buckingham Palace. Her queenly wave to crowds is soon converted to longer conversations when she asks “What are you reading lately” and then the Quenn can’t stay on schedule to the consternation of her handlers. It is a novella, so quick and easy read. You won’t regret it.
Years ago I was reading “Growing Up Catholic” and laughing so hard I was crying. Someone asked me if I was reading a joke book ? I said “No, Growing up Catholic was No Joke”. But as I look back I can Laugh now… Especially the chapter called “Father What a Waste”. Also The Last Catholic In America” was very Funny. They based the play “Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up” (the 2nd Book) on this 1st book. The 2nd book wasn’t as funny.
@Jennifer Don’t know about that – I’ve never walked the AT and found it hysterical…I’m not one to giggle while reading much let alone fall into convulsive waves of full body laughter.
@Kristin that’s my point, though — it was even funnier than it would have been if I had no working knowledge of what it’s like to be on the trail for 6 days. And it was pretty dang funny to begin with! (I always remember those dang Snickers bars.)
Yes, Mama Makes Up Her Mind starts out with the most exquisite piece about taking Mama out for mullet in the most dive cafe imaginable–one of the best pieces of writing one can find anywhere. Every sentence is perfect.
Surprisingly, Shirley Jackson wrote two of the funniest books I ever read. They are about her children. Life Among the Savages and the sequel Raising Demons. Funniest stories ever.
M. C. Beaton’s Agatha Raisin series is SO FUNNY I enjoy audio books, and my kids are often in the car. So I look for books without things that would embarrass me or them. Pretty much Agatha pulls that off. ?
For those from the south (as well as those who wish they were) I would heartily recommend TR Pearson’s A Short History of a Small Place. It is laugh out loud funny even the darker parts. In fact I was asked politely to stop reading it on a flight from Seattle to Charlotte because my laughing was disturbing others. It is part of a trilogy – Off to the Sweet Hereafter and The Last of How It Was.
This is laugh out loud. There is a serious side but when I finished I wanted to applaud her and what you will take away is the funny sometimes hysterical parts. It is one of Reese’s picks also.

Who are you? And I ask because it defines my recommendation. If you have kids in elementary school, or ever did Class Mom.

That is one of the funniest books I’ve ever read. Glad to know others have enjoyed it too.

Sh*t my dad says
This is laugh out loud. There is a serious side but when I finished I wanted to applaud her and what you will take away is the funny sometimes hysterical parts. It is one of Reese’s picks also.
I loved this book!!
This is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper…laugh out loud funny.
Agreed on Tropper book. Funny and engaging. Good movie too
His others are also good but I can’t remember if they’re funny

Just read Thunderbolt Kid by Bill Bryson. Brought back memories of growing up in the 50’s. Very funny.
