Its quite famous these days. I think the author is Japanese I guess but not sure.

He is. The author’s name is Haruki Murakami. Brilliant writer. I’ve read most of his books but haven’t gotten around to this one unfortunately.

It’s on my TBR. It doesn’t seem like 1984, it’s more an alternate universe I think.

1Q84 is a trilogy by Haruki Murakami, it’s between fantasy and Japanese culture.

Have you read 1984 by George Orwell

Sandrine

Yes, years ago in…1984! We studied it at school (I was 17 and this book impressed me so much!)

Following because it’s on my tbr. I’ve read a bit of Murakami before (Kafka on the Shore) and enjoyed that, so I’m excited about eventually getting round to some more.

I liked “Kafka on the shore” too. Want to read some more of Murakami’s work, but not sure what to choose

Have you read 1984 by George Orwell?

@Ilda give “The Wind Up Bird Chronicles” a shot if you haven’t read it yet. That is by far one of my favorite Murakami’s books.

Thank you for the suggestion Evelyn Fernandez I found it, and it is on my TBR list now. 🙂

I read it, I stayed intrigued by the story even while it was boring me, and I was not rewarded by the end. Very unsatisfying read. But I do have that with other books by Murakami so maybe we are just incompatible, as others seem to like him a lot!

Is it SciFi? What’s it about?

What your favorite genre by the way?

Marlie

It was like in this world but all kind of akward things keep happening and nothing seems logic, so it starts as normal novel and then it deteriorates in surrealism. Not even sci-fi I think.

1
Marlie

I read all kinds of genres, mostly (classic) literature from all over the world. I believe good sci-fi belongs to literature as well.

I see…well I also love classical but I like SciFi more. Well…I feel like trying it any how ?

Good! Always try yourself!

Both are on my list, but haven’t read either one yet. Would love to be kept updated when you read it though.

So far I’m not getting any positive view on 1Q84, it seems like an odd book

Those two books have absolutely nothing in common. Murakami’s 1Q84 is set in contemporary Tokyo. One of the main characters is a woman called Aomame who does a specific thing for a living. Not going to say what it is to avoid spoilers. … Actually, the less I say the better. What I can say is that it is one of the best books I have ever read. Murakami has a knack for understanding women and I have seldom encountered a male author who writes women so well, so real. I love the supernatural bits in it too. It gives it this very spooky atmosphere at times. Every single character is interesting. The plot takes twists that will surprise you. I can highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys the X-files, Fringe, the Twilight Zone or anything by Alfred Hitchcock. There are some graphic sexual and violent scenes in it. They don’t make up the main vibe of the story, but they might be disturbing for people who’d rather avoid that sort of thing.

It’s 1Q84. In japanese the numbers are pronounced: ichi, kyū, hachi, yon. As you can see the japanese pronounciation for “nine” sounds just like the letter “Q”… And there you have it.

How intriguing!
