Harry Potter is good and their not that long (at least to me), diary of a whimpy kid books are popular

My daughter started the Harry Potter series when she was 10. We read de first book together and she fell in love with it.

Don’t know about short but James Patterson and David Baldacci have series that are written for youngsters. Google them perhaps. Enjoy.??
