I recently read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. It was an award winner for young adults….lol, which I am far from being…but, I really enjoyed the book. I recommend it as it was fact based.

The Indian writing in English is rich, varied and awesome.
But the real one is that which is written in the hundreds of local languages.

I’ve only read books in Hindi/Urdu, but the literature which is created in the local languages, carry much more authenticity, and flavour of the soil. As for some of the English books, which I’ve read recently and liked are Em and the Big Hoom by Jerry Pinto, and Ghachor Ghochar by Vivek Shanbhag. I am also intrigued by When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi, and it is in my to be read list. As for Hindi & Urdu writers there are so many that I’d like to recommend: Premchand, Manto, Vijay Dan Detha, etc.
