I personally take it off and put it back on after I’ve read the book. Or you can get a paperback sleeve ?

I take the covers off then put them back on when I’m done and they go up on my shelf.

I use book sleeves! You just have to make sure you get one big enough so that it doesn’t squish the edges

I take them off till I’m ready to put it back on the shelf.
I never read with them on.
I also use booksleeves if they’re going to be in my bag.
