Brilliant set of books I’m trying to persuade my 9 year old to read them

@Amy I just got the first one (The Lion the witch and the wardrobe) and I was a little shocked at how small it is. Is there plenty of story in it? I’ve heard it’s very good but I feel like I could read it in an hour which makes me think it’s not very rich in detail or story.

Please tell me I’m wrong haha

Def wrong, they are very small books but the story they contain is fab. Enjoy!

They are very small. I have all 7 books in a collection and it’s hardly even the size of some stand alone books.
FYI, the first book is The Magician’s Nephew. It is great for world building and the history of Narnia. The next books are set after this and follow the adventures of the Pevensie children.

I don’t follow the Magicians nephew as being the first. In the witch and the wardrobe it’s written as though your only being introduced for the first time which doesn’t make sense if you read the MN first

@Malcolm C.S. Lewis did intend after the publication of The Magician’s Nephew that it be read first

Hmmm, from my research he never released anything telling anyone in what order to read them in. Are you sure it’s not just Harper Collins saying that?

Alexander

he “preferred” chronological order (Collected Letters III, 847n.)

Ah okay, well I think I will stick with Publication haha

Duncan

Yeah, the publication history is different from the chronological history.
I’m sure it doesn’t matter though, you’ll still enjoy them 🙂

Definitely. The creation story is The Magicians Nephew is probably my favourite bit.

If you get chance, compare that to the creation of middle earth in The Simarillion. Two phenomenally good pieces of literature

Yes. Amazing story. I love c.s. Lewis. He was an incredibly gifted story teller amongst other things. I’m re-reading his space trilogy right now myself since I got it on bookoutlet for super cheap.

@Audra I loved that one too. Escepially Tinidril’s answer to Ransom toward the end of the book. A lack of trust would be “cold love.”

I was a huge fan of them. I wouldn’t call them YA, but they’re very wholesome for sure. Always reninded me of the Redwall series.

All of the books up to the Silver Chair are very good children’s books. Afterward? Well, they kind of go off the rails with Clive’s biblical parables.

Dawn Berry Actually he was Anglican/Episcopalian. C.S. and Tolkien had differences over this, because Tolkien was Catholic. But Tolkien was highly instrumental in C.S. coming to faith in Christ. They’re both master storytellers. C.S.’s nonfiction works really make you think.

I very much enjoyed the majority of the books but the last two are redoings of Genesis and the Book of Revelations that just aren’t as entertaining as his original works.

As a kid, I adored them. As an adult, some of them just don’t have the same emotional effect on me.
My favorites are: “The Magician’s Nephew,” “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” and “Prince Caspian.”
These seem to be the most popular ones. Probably why they made movies from 2 of them.
I was not a big fan of “The Last Battle.”

TLTWATW was the first story written about Narnia, so it has the best introduction to that fantasy world as written by the author and so I have always read that story first
