Everyday is also a good one. Not strictly LGBQT but is interesting in terms of how we define ‘gender’

A darker shade of magic is an adult fantasy trilogy?

1
Sophie

I really enjoyed the Captive Prince trilogy!

4
Pauliina

Sarah Waters’ books are adult fiction 🙂

1
Melissa

That are both fiction and not depressing or erotica? None that I would recommend. Adult fiction tends to err on the side of tragic.
Nonfiction is usually great, though.
Karen Kallmaker would be the only fiction recommendation. Her books tend to end lighter than most.

1
Melissa

Oh, and Katherine V. Forrest’s books cover different genres.

1
Lynette

Song chilled is tragic, but one of my faves!

Ramona Blue by Julie Murphy is fantastic! I haven’t read We Are Okay yet, but I’ve heard wonderful things (same goes for “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” and “Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue”). If you want a solid mystery novel Last Seen Leaving (Authors last name is Roerhig I think, I can’t remember his first name) is not the most amazing book, but v enjoyable

Ramona Blue technically falls under YA, but (as someone who’s not typically huge on YA) I actually adored it. Same goes for Last Seen Leaving. We Are Okay may technically be New Adult? Im not entirely sure tho

And if you want some of the classics… The Well of Loneliness, Giovanni’s Room, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Fun Home, The Color Purple, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, Go Tell It On The Mountain, and Tipping the velvet. Trans people are supernatural underrepresented, and currently the only thing I can’t think of is If I Were Your Girl. (If you want more suggestions, feel free to let me know. I literally took a class on LGBT+ lit.)

Elise

Can I ask you if you have any references of schoolbooks or notes about that class? I’m making a thesis on LGBT rep in children lit, and that could help me for the historical part 😀

0
Lynette

Not sure that I still do, but I’ll be happy to check! We didn’t have any textbooks, just a lot of other literature. I’m thinking it was mostly just the LGBT texts themselves and not much in the way of historical/critical texts. But yes, I will check and get back to you!

0
Elise

Thank you so much!!!

0
Vanessa

@Lynette were all the titles you listed books from the class? I’m jealous!

0
Elise

Fan art, this is where it ends, Nimona, The boy in the dress, Lola and the boy nect door, winger, Ruby, Left to themselves, Tipping velvet, Fingersmith, a hero at the end of the world, not your sidekick… I have a google doc folder of LGBT ebooks of you want I can send you the link?

Trans-Sister Radio by Chris Bohjalian. “When Allison Banks develops a crush on Dana Stevens, she knows that he will give her what she needs most: attention, gentleness, kindness, passion. Her daughter, Carly, enthusiastically witnesses the change in her mother. But then a few months into their relationship, Dana tells Allison his secret: he has always been certain that he is a woman born into the wrong skin, and soon he will have a sex-change operation. Allison, overwhelmed by the depth of her passion, finds herself unable to leave Dana. By deciding to stay, she finds she must confront questions most people never even consider. Not only will her own life and Carly s be irrevocably changed, she will have to contend with the outrage of a small Vermont community and come to terms with her lover s new body hoping against hope that her love will transcend the physical.”

Since no one has mentioned it yet: Ash by Malinda Lo. It’s a fantastic Asian inspired lesbian retelling of Cinderella. On the fluffier adult romance side, I like Nell Stark’s The Princess Affair. VK Powell’s About Face is also a pretty good lesbian mystery/romance

All of these I’m going to recommend are featuring lesbian or bisexual women ^_^
I’ve seen a few of Nina LaCour’s books mentioned in the comments, definitely agree you should check those out, they’re amazing! ‘We Are Okay’ and ‘Everything Leads To You’ are great books! Also the book ‘Forgive Me If I’ve Told You This Before’ by Karelia Stetz-Waters is another great one about coming out and coming to terms with sexuality. If you like sci-fi I recommend ‘The Long Way To A Small Angry Planet’ by Becky Chambers (an absolute favourite of mine) and ‘The Stars Are Legion’ by Kameron Hurley both of which do not make a big deal about the fact the characters are lesbian/bisexual (they’re treated like any other character) but those characters and their relationships are a main part of the story which is great to see! ?
