I thought that too & was beginning to think too many references to pubescent boys with their hands down their pyjamas! But actually…. this is one worth persevering with. I ended up really enjoying it

Keep going, it’s a good book, even though bits were very repetitive and predictable , ( and annoying!) but I’m glad I finished, wouldn’t of not read it,

I gave up on it too. In the very beginning it seemed interesting, but then I just did not like it, too weird. I got to the point where the main character’s mother resurfaces, probably at least 100 pages in. I may try it again sometime.

I was beginning to think I was alone in not being completely bowled over by this book. Maybe I’m prudish but I didn’t enjoy all the accounts of his younger life, however found some aspects exceptionally moving, and it definitely got better in the second half. I completely get where the author was coming from with the content, his personal experiences, and the influences and prejudices of the setting and times, but I did find it rather too bawdy for my taste, particularly in the first half.
