It depends. Everything I guess. What I mean by that is that I need to be drawn in. I need to forget I’m here. I need to see nothing else but the story. I’ve read badly written books. Or rather books that needed a bit more editing but I loved them for the characters and plots. There are books I fall in love with because of the language etc. Two books that I have read recently stole my heart in minutes after I started reading them. The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton and Autumn by Ali Smith.
Here’s a quote from Autumn by Ali Smith.

It just takes something to churn the carth round them up, and when it does up come the sleeping words bright red, fresh, blowing about. Then the seedheads rattle, the seeds fall out. Then there' even more language waiting to come up. S'

It can be the most boring story but if it is written beautifully I’m gonna love it… and also a poor writing but a great story that it’s in my taste still gonna like it!

Pretty much all of that. I like many different things, but Stephen King writes like he knows my soul!
