Robin Hobb all the way. Except I’d start at the beginning with Assassins Apprentice.

Most of David Gemmell’s books are awesome.

I’m fairly new to the genre too. I’m just finishing off the broken empire trilogy by Mark Lawrence. It’s phenomenal, I’ve absolutely loved it.

I’m hoping to read the mistborn books with my reading group at some point. Always thought they looked good.

Abercrombie is great, but his stuff is very violent and very dark – they call it grimdark. So be prepared for some seriously nasty stuff.

You could start with the classics, as mentioned above. But frankly, I find reading the classics like driving a Model-T – it’s an interesting novelty, but I would rather drive a modern car.

So if you want something more modern, I’d say read Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. 🙂

Dont go with the classics and 90s first. Do some contemporary stuff like Brandon Sanderson, Abercrombie, Anthony ryan, Patrick Rothfuss, or George rr Martin first. The older stuff holds up, but the newer stuff just has a more modern sensibility.

First Law by Joe Abercrombie is my personal favourite, Anything by David Gemmell especially Drenai saga, Mark Lawrence’s Broken Empire, Red Queen’s War & Book of the Ancestor trilogies, Luke Scull’s Grim Company, the Greatcoats series by Sebastian De Castell, Kings of the Wyld & Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames

What do you normally like to read? You could start with an adjacent fantasy version of that genre
