Penguin Clothbound (hardbacks) are wonderful – excellent notes, introductions etc. Well priced too.

You’re probably looking for it in book form, but anytime I’ve needed help with chapter summaries, character analysis or themes, SparkNotes (you could Google it) has been awesome. ?

True, @Crystal, but Litcharts are even better – um, but I think non-teachers have to pay… not sure, but worth a look.

I have read all the annotated unabridged editions of the Jane Austen novels. I think the annotated editions appeal to modern readers as they offer additional insight into the social, cultural and historical background and even explain words which now have a different meaning than at the time Jane Austen lived. They also have illustrations which help you visualise the way the landscape, homes and even types of dress/clothing would have looked like. I also like the introductions. Overall, they add to your enjoyment & understanding. (I usually read the regular edition again without the annotations and have found I enjoy it even more because I have more understanding of this period in history) I have managed to get them all from the library. (An example would be ‘Pride & Prejudice’ annotated by David M. Shepard)

When I was a lit student, I always used Spark Notes just to get some basic ideas and find the starting point to my own theories. They are really helpful with analysis and symbolism as well.
