I don’t have a 12 year old but my 10 year old enjoys the Rangers Apprentice series, Mary Downing Hahn books (ghost/creepy stories). My 11 year old likes Halo books and has just gotten into Guardians of the Galaxy graphic novels.
They are 5th and 6th graders.
Margaret Peterson Haddix has some interesting series too. We’ve only read the first 2 of The Missing series but they were good.

John flannagan makes an intertwining universe of books with Rangers Apprentice and the Brotherband Chronicles. Also would suggest the Fablehavrn series and it’s sequel series of dragonwatch.
And also the summoner trilogy is good. A sprinkle of D&D involved with those stories

My 13 year old son is reading Anthony Horowitz right now . Brandon Mull books are popular, The Unwanted series is good. If you can find Three Investigators from the 70s, they are awesome. Hardy Boys, Calvin and Hobbs cartoon books, Marvel books, World Guinness records…. all popular.
39 clues series is good. If he likes mystery
Michael Grant’s Gone series. Also cherub series.
