HATED it. I almost never abandon a book but I had to quit after I soldiered through maybe the first 2/3 of it. I just felt irritated and vaguely nauseated every time I read more.
Okay, I feel kind of the same… I feel like it’s a little all over the place and just kind of banking off the fact that we know about the Manson Family so it leaves a lot out and bounces around…
@Danielle yes! I agree. In addition to be creepy and annoying, I found the structure to be loosely held together by the expectation that we all knew enough about the Mansons. And boy, was the structure loosely held together…. it’s kind of a mess.
Completely agree!! I just didn’t want to be the only one who felt that way especially after it supposedly got a $2 million advance and praise and blah blah blah, I’m not going to quit (yet anyways) I hate having DNF’s but I’m really struggling…
Yep – terrible. I thought it was because I had read too many Charles Manson-themed books around the same time, but I think it just wasn’t that gripping.
I suggested it for my bookclub and had to finish it b/c I was leading the discussion. I thought it was okay, but a lot of our members hated it. That being said, it was one of the best discussions we have had.
Not a fan here either. I wanted to like it, but it just wasn’t as gripping as I thought it should be. It felt very made for tv (for lack of a better way to describe it) and not very compelling.
Yup. I didn’t enjoy it at all. I felt like it was a rip off of Helter Skelter, and felt if I wanted to read a book about Charles Manson, I’d read an actual book about him.
I’ve read everything about him/the family, that’s why I am giving this one a whirl ?? I had just finished Dianne Lake’s book “Member of the Family” and feel like The Girls is kind of ripping off her story too
@Marjorie I really liked it. I’ve literally read a lot about the family and Dianne’s story is interesting because her parents quit their life and moved all the kids to a commune so she had a rough upbringing. I recommend reading it. It was a very quick read also.
I liked it, but I didn’t love it. I thought she was a good writer, but chalked it up to the main character’s not really being sympathetic to me. When I don’t like the main character I am much more likely to come away feeling ambivalent.
I read this and wish I could figure out how to send an iBook to You! That said, I thought it was ok…if you are really interested in the Manson murders, read Vincent Bugliosi book.
I finished. Thanks for all the support. I couldn’t have done it without all of you. But it was horrible. Like, what did I just read? Has she come out with anything since?! Now onto Janice Dickenson (I like variety) ?
i did, i was VERY disapointed but did stay with it. NOT a good book, and it had SO much potential..I’m fascinated by the subject matter and was SO excited someone had written something like this,, then i read it..meh.
I literally tossed it in the recycle bin when I finished it. When I got it, I didn’t know it was going to be a fictionalized account of the Manson murders. It was a tough read for many reasons and it was just a total disappointment for me.
I read it and liked it
I did and I liked it. If I remember right, it took a couple of chapters in before it hooked me
Okay so maybe I will keep going… I am 35% through (according to goodreads, lol)
Hated. Couldn’t finish. But I only got like 1/4 in, if that. So maybe it got better?♀️
Meh. I thought it was okay.
@Emily agree
I did not like that book at all.

Hated it.
I hated it too
I wanted something different from the story…didn’t hate it, but I wasn’t in love. Pretty quick read, though.
I read it. I didn’t have any strong feelings about it one way or another.
I found it to be terrible
It took me awhile to get into it.
I didn’t like it
I liked it!
Abandoned it shortly after I started. I wanted to like it but wasn’t happening ?
Finished it, but definitely didn’t love it
I finished, but it was a struggle!
Yep – terrible. I thought it was because I had read too many Charles Manson-themed books around the same time, but I think it just wasn’t that gripping.
Liked not loved
I hated it!
I really liked it
I loved it! One of my favorite books I read last year.
Read it. Not my favorite. I expected more…
Could not get into it at all…gave up
I hated it!
I thought there was a lot of good tension but it didn’t go anywhere at the end.
I found it interesting, but really expected more out of it.
I liked it, but it definitely wouldn’t be for everyone.
Agree.
it was ok for me
I had a hard time getting through it.
I slogged through it because I didn’t want to quit .. but I was underwhelmed
I wanted to like it but had to give up.
Next up in my TBR is “No lifeguard on duty” by Janice Dickenson ?
I got through it. But it was a bit flat. ??♀️
Yeah, I thought it was kinda meh.
Ugh. I hated the protagonist. That never helps. ?
It was just ok for me
I didn’t enjoy it
Yep. Meh.

HOW is Member of the Family? I am fascinated by these stories and would love something good BESIDES Helter Skelter which i’ve read a dozen times.
I’ve never read that book.

I tried it but couldn’t force myself through it.
I pushed through it but really don’t see why it was called such a great book
I was mad that I couldn’t get that time back. I kept expecting it to get better. It didn’t.
I did, but I had a hard time too.
it was hard
It was okay. I didn’t love it or hate it. I did finished it because I needed to know how it ended.
Was not at all what I expected, in that I expected it to be good.
I read it. Was just ok for me.
I read this and wish I could figure out how to send an iBook to You! That said, I thought it was ok…if you are really interested in the Manson murders, read Vincent Bugliosi book.
I couldn’t finish it. I had to put it down. It was too creepy for me.
Boring…
Ugh!
I gave up after 3 chapters
Read it. Okay. Not great.
It’s alright.
Well, I will not be voting for this for the book club. I couldn’t get into it either and didn’t finish
I have no idea why there was so much hype around this book. It had moments, but on the whole it was disappointing.
Quit half way through
I finished it but slogged through it. ☹️
Well written, but I didn’t connect with the subject matter.
Yes, I read it. Very well written but the characters were difficult to resonate with.
I slogged thru. Not a fan
I quit it after about 100 pages.
Yes and hated it. I finished it, but she went on my “never read this author again” list; it takes a lot for me to do that.
It was ok
I finished. Thanks for all the support. I couldn’t have done it without all of you.
But it was horrible. Like, what did I just read?
Has she come out with anything since?!
