I never set myself reading goals, that will only put pressure on things, I don’t like pressure because that makes me stop reading.

My Goodreads challenge, this year it’s 110 books & I’ve read 91 books, I don’t stress myself about it, if I don’t finish the challenge, it’s not a big deal?

Many years ago, I took part in a reading challenge from a group on BookCrossing, whereby I had to read one book per nation participating in the Olympics. there was a deadline, but the challenge was issued two years before that date, so there was ample time, It was fun, and very rewarding, but I have no burning desire to do it again. I just am much more open to reading authors outside the US now.

That sounds like a good Challenge.

It was..I learned a lot..For instance, there are more nations with Olympic committees than there are nations reckognized by the UN. Technically, I did not have to read for Scotland, since they do not play under their own flag.. but it seemed wrong to skip a place that has given us so many wonderful writers whose works I could actually read since they’re mostly written in English, or are readily available in translation.. I had an awful time finding works to represent many of the smaller countries. I could not find ANYthing for many of them..and resorted to travel guides or cookbooks. I read several books for some countries, such as Russia and Japan. Too many great titles were suggested to me, so I just went with it.

That’s a great challenge. Not sure I could do that, but good for you.

I’ve set mine at 100, but I’m nowhere near my goal….oh well. Maybe next year.

My goal is for 75 this year. I’m at 54 now. I started the year thinking I would do 100, but I’ve barely made it over 60, so I scaled back a bit. I’m upping my reading game this year!!

My goal is 75, too, @Lorrea, and I’m also at 54. I think we’ll make it!

I’m a cinephile, an amateur photographer as well as a reader, so my free time is cut very thin. My only goal is to read at least two hours a day. Now and then I get in a little more.

Set my fall goal of a nice stack of books… I’ve read 4 as of right now and started last week. …… but I keep adding too so I’m not sure if it’s counted as something accomplished but it’s looking good!

Reading more classics, underrated books and more adult lit, plus a reading goal of 60 books (right now I am at number 89). I’ve done pretty good – I haven’t read many classics but more than last year, read a lot of adult fiction (I had a YA Phase the last 2-3 years) and I got to read some books I never heard somebody talk about.

I have my challenge set to 90 books which I’m pretty sure I’ll pass. I also wanted to read more diversely which I have been. The next few months I have a goal to read more of the books I own and not request so many from the library so hopefully I can stick to that! ????

Besides the reading challenges I tried this year, my personal goal was to read 100. I should be able to meet the goal but probably won’t surpass it this year.

I don’t like setting goals on things I enjoy as it makes it a chore and takes the joy out of it.

I agree. I used to set the Goodreads goal, but then found myself just reading just to beat it. I no longer set any

That’s a good idea. My husband participates in an online cycling group called Ride the Year. I think they’re all nuts…

I always do the Goodreads Challenge. This year I set it at 75 books, but I’ve set it at 100 before. It seems like I’m not getting as many read lately, but I’m reading lots of great books, so that’s good.

For me, reading is now purely a pleasurable experience. I no longer set goals and I no longer feel I have to finish a book once I’ve started it.

Vicki

Absolutely. Life is too short to spend time finishing a dull book. We know there are better books out there..

Paula

I don’t waste my time on a bad book, I used to persevere then thought “sod it” & stopped reading any book I wasn’t enjoying?

1
Lizbeth

thanks John, I feel the same way. Sometimes I am anxious to read a book recommended, then 1/3 into it I feel disappointed and give it up. I will keep it and perhaps go back to it when I am desperate.

I believe there are seasons in life for just about everything..individual book titles fall firmly into that hypothesis. I can’t count the times I have tried to read a book ‘everyone’ swoons over, just to find me shaking my head, wondering what I’m missing..only to find I love it a year or ten down the road.
