I’m currently waiting for Corey Taylor’s new book to arrive at my house. I ordered it online and it’s being shipped from America because it’s a signed copy! Not sure how this rates on the crazy scale! ?

It’s crazy expensive no doubt! lol

Tracy

Yeah and I paid in dollars. The money hasn’t been taken off my account yet but no doubt it’s the most I’ve paid for a book ?

1
PaulaQuestion author

Wait till you pay the shipping part lol

1
Kathy

@Tracy, I do the reverse. I order from Book Depository some to get books published in Great Britain early or because I like the British cover. But, BD is a good deal, prices are great and free shipping.

1
Tracy

I like BD, too. It’s a great site!

I’m not sure if this is what you meant, but here goes. I’ve completed the 2017 Popsugar reading challenge except for one prompt – read a book you bought on a trip. I’ve never bought a book on a trip. I was pretty bummed about leaving one undone. I have a brother in law is currently working in Los Angeles (I’m in Houston) so I planned a way for my husband and I to stay in his hotel room with him for free, and stalked the plane ticket prices until I found a really good deal. Less than a week before we were supposed to go, Hurricane Harvey hit. I had to reschedule for a week later and tell all the insurance and FEMA people we’d be back later. We had to rip out flooring and dry wall a few days before the trip. One day before the trip I got a severe toothache and had to get a tooth pulled. Remarkably I still made it to LA. I took an uber all the way to The Last Bookstore which cost $50, bought the book Americanah, and somehow convinced my brother in law to come get us in rush hour traffic.
That’s seriously the craziest thing I’ve ever done just to get a book I could’ve ordered from Amazon.

That’s dedication, @Marsha!

Paula

I’m very impressed Marsha, you deserve some sort of medal or book medal ? x

1
Kelly

I don’t know if that is crazy, but I buy a book in every country or city I visit. And in these rare cases, even if I don’t like the book, I keep it, because it reminds me of the trip.
Or there is that one time I traveled hundreds of kilometer, just for a specific book in a bookshop that was closed.
Or going to the airport (like 45 minutes ride with the subway..) or the trainstation on sundays for the bookstore, because on sundays, all shops except gas stations, restaurants etc. are closed in Germany.

I like to do that, too, @Kelly!

I probably buy one everywhere I go but not consciously – I just can’t keep away from bookshops, market stall, charity shops, etc.

Once saw a large pile of assorted books in a dumpster. It was going to rain. I “dumpster dove” picking out some things I wanted. I was feeling very self conscious. A woman stopped and asked me, “What I was doing?” I felt very silly as a I started to explain. She climbed in too and started looking for things she wanted.

I was on a book forum some years ago and became very friendly with a fellow book lover. We chatted a lot, emailed, talked on phone and got into the habit of sending out books (and other little gifts) to each other that we knew the other would enjoy. His favorite writer was Russell Banks and he gifted me his well read & battered copy of The Sweet Hereafter. After a while we planned for him to come and stay with me for a weekend and I wanted to give him something special. I figured I would try and get that copy of The Sweet Hereafter signed by Mr. Banks. I was also on a less than 2 week time limit. I couldn’t find him anywhere, he was on FB, but not accepting friends nor messages. So I did the next best thing: I looked up his wife, found and messaged her my heartfelt plea on FB and without hesitation she gave me her home address and said she’d not only have him sign it but personalize it with any message I wanted. Only catch was I had to send it by the next day because they were moving house in a week. Fast forward to ‘his” visit and it was literally the best gift he ever received. He was extremely touched

What do you mean, crazy or outrageous for a book?

Edit: Well… here’s one, I suppose. It’s not crazy or outrageous but people that know I do this say it’s weird. I always have 2 copies of my favorite books. One that I never read that stays in pristine condition and one that I’ll read over and over. Don’t get me wrong, the condition of the one I read doesn’t get trashed, but it does start to show wear after the years.

Whatever way you want to define it. Something out of your norm 🙂

John

I have two complete sets of Terry Pratchett’s for the same reason, Shannon.

1
Shannon

@John have you heard of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child’s Pendergast series? I have two sets of all their books.

PS. If you haven’t, you should. I highly recommend them.

Same here – took my kids to several launch parties and bought the books when they went on sale at midnight. I would have gone without the kids but they were a nice excuse!

Well, I used to read for a living. (Worked as a project editor for a publisher until last year.) Now I have a communications job – still words, words, words. I love words!

At college (many, many decades ago) while very broke I managed four days of living on cauliflower cheese to save my food money for a book. I even gave up smoking for a week to help pay for it.

I remember when the sixth Harry Potter book came out. I had to get permission to leave cadet camp with my mum and waited at Chapters for hours just to get my hands on a copy. I nearly bit the one kid who grabbed the same book I did. I remember returning back to cadet camp with that Harry Potter book and I was SO VERY popular! Does that count as crazy or outrageous? 😛
