Have read 25% of a book and I have no interest in it at all. How far do you go with a book? Do you ever give up on a book?

I used to be fastidious about getting to the end of books I didn’t enjoy – I was like Indiana Jones hacking through the jungle – but now… not so much. I’ll give a book 100 pages. Maybe 101,102, if I’m generous.

My kindle tells me there is a further 5 hours reading time! I am giving up. BTW it is not a book by an author member.

I’m on the third book of a trilogy which up until now I have really enjoyed. …
And I really want to know what happens at the end…
But it’s almost like it’s been written for a film. ..you can see how fast paced a film would be but it’s a bit slow and patchy in text.
I’m persevering.

Think I’ve only given up on 3 books and I’ll not be tempted to try those authors again

When I was young I would read until the bitter end. Today, if I’m not at all interested, I’ll stop after I’ve read about 25% of the book. I figure, it’s just not for me — just as some of the books I like aren’t of interest to others.

I haven’t given up on many books, in fact only one comes to mind. Having said that, I personally wouldn’t persevere with a book if I wasn’t really enjoying it. Especially since my TBR pile is massive and there are loads of good books that I can’t wait to read.

Confession….I got sucked up by all the hype, and am very embarrassed to say I bought the first 50 shades book.So badly written and a load of rubbish Managed about 25 per cent then deleted it from my kindle..Will stick to crime stories now….have always managed to read tothe end of them

I read an article @Kathleen, that said Charity Shops are inundated with them and they can’t get them sold!

2
Lucy

I read the same article. Not sure I believe it tho cuz they get snapped up where I live. Though could be the same ones boomeranging back of course! Haha

The last book I gave up on was Gone Girl.

That was the first one I gave up on

I actually started it before all the hype. Then seeing rave reviews I gave it another go. I have tried 3 times to read it and it just does not interest me.

1
Craig

I started it before the hype as well and hated everything about it

1
Julie

I got to the end but really didn’t enjoy it. I don’t think I’ll buy another Gillian Flynn. Am glad to hear you both say this, since everyone else seems to like it.
I usually try to finish a book- tho I may speed-read. I almost gave up on AS Byatt’s Possession hlaf-way through , but persevered and it’s one of my favourites.

I feel a bit of a failure if I give up but some books just don’t grab me

I do too! But there are so many books to read!

1

If I get bored or it annoys me, I stop reading it but I have on occasion finished an awful book just to see if it can get any worse.

I read about 100 pages and if it’s still no good I put it aside. There are so much books to read so I don’t waste my time

1

but ive read a few thrillers now and they are my fav…

I never used to, I used to stick with the most dullest of books and get absolutely nothing from them except wasted hours of reading time! Now if I’m not into it I stop and move on to something else! It might not be for me, but someone else will appreciate it so off it goes to the charity shop! 25% is quite a way through too, if your not interested at all by the time your a quarter of the way into the book? There’s just no point really is there! Move on, find something more for you!

I try and give a halfway chance. But there have been a couple that have been put down after just a couple of chapters.

Dare I say it, but some of the most boring books are the so called classics. It’s a case of the Emperor’s New Clothes syndrome.

100 pages. If it hasn’t gripped me by then I give up!

Can I just say, at this point, that IMHO it is not fair to leave a review on a book you’ve given up on, especially early on. I’ve had one bad one from someone who stopped reading in the first paragraph – of itself perfectly fine, but not for the reason they gave. Those who’ve read Ted will know what I’m referring to 😉

I give the book a chance as sometimes they get good after a while I don’t really give up but I do flick through until the end so I know what happened

I hate giving up on a book, but then life is too short to waste it on a book of no interest and I find it also puts me off reading for a while if I read a book I have no interest in and that’s not good !

I know within a couple of pages. Used to read first few chapters and for me personally I know now that a couple of pages is all I need to know. I have now what I consider my faithful authors/Esses……. taken me ages, but happy with my decision now. X
