Actually there’s a 4th and 5th out now! I’ve read the majority of the series with the exception of book #4. I was hoping to get into some convos about the books 🙂
@Krista oh gotcha. Just FYI, I skipped book #4 and was disappointed with book #5. That’s actually why I asked the original question. I was hoping to see what others thought of book 5
From the sound of it, I might not read it. I read the first and third books of the fionavar tapestry but hated the third book so I never went back and read the second. I try not to skip books after that. Spoiled it and I had no desire to see where it went wrong.
Krista Gossett makes sense. Goldenhand wasn’t necessarily bad, but definitely wasn’t anywhere close to the original 3. It felt like a completely different author wrote it. But I knew I could skip the 4th without missing anything crucial because it was a prequel to the entire series.
Hmm, I might at least like the 4th then. There was plenty about former Abhorsens that I was curious about. Maybe read that then the original trilogy again even.
Sara Douglass has the Wayfarer’s Redemption series that I never finished but really liked and will need to start over since it’s been years since I remembered. I also really enjoyed the Myst books. I’ve been more of a creator than a consumer over the past few years so my favorites aren’t recent. Lol
@Dana I’d be honest – compared to the other books I did find it disappointing – but I still loved it because it’s showing you what happened after – I’m actually in the middle of re reading the whole set – have you read the short story To hold the bridge? I was so disappointed at that because I wanted more!
@Chelsea ughh I was SO disappointed too!! I read a review that perfectly captured how I felt after finishing the book: it was differently paced than the original trilogy, suuper slow and not in a good way and then the very end of the book felt majorly rushed and unfinished. I feel like the book was a ton of filler and then ended in a way that felt cut off just so that it would entice you to read the next book.
So To Hold The Bridge was good??? I just ordered and am waiting to read Across The Wall. Did you read that one also??
Yeah I enjoyed to hold the Bridge – there’s only one short story in the book based on the old kingdom – but it was a story I definitely felt he could’ve done more with – the same with across the wall it’s one short story based on Nicholas, again about a hundred pages long. Interesting but more to know what’s happened with characters than for its own story.
I also really enjoyed Clariel, i know it’s had a lot of mixed reviews with many people not liking it, and I admit the first time reading it it took me time to get into – but on my next try I read it first so Clariel, Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsan, The creature in the case (short story) To hold the bridge (short story) Goldenhand in that order and I found I enjoyed it a lot more for small things – hints at things in the future or in the past and making those connections
@Chelsea yea I could see that for sure. I’m really looking forward to reading the short stories for sure. As I was reading Goldenhand there were plenty of references to the creature in the case so I’m definitely curious!
@Chelsea omg Creature In The Case was soooooo gooooood!!! Worlds better than the entire Goldenhand story! This read much more like the original 3. The pace was so much better and the story much more cohesive. Although my only regret is that it didn’t delve more into the Hrule. I was hoping to find out more about it in this, but maybe in next one!
I heard pretty poor reviews on the 4th book and wasn’t really interested in a prequel so I skipped it, but was still really excited about the 5th book but I felt it was kind of sadly disappointing unfortunately
Too many to count lol i recommend D.M Cornish, Ransom Riggs, David Eddings, Taran Martharu, Lisa McMann. If you want a list of series i have collected and am slowly reading through let me know ill PM you
@Dana umm pretty different to the old kingdom series but I also really enjoyed Kelly Armstrong women of the other world series. Characters from all walks of supernatural life with books about different characters but also all linking in with one another. There’s 13 main books in the series which kept me going for a while! Anything you’d recommend?
I thought it was great, equally as good as the first three and really brings the prequel (clariel) into it as well!! I can see this being another trilogy ? throne of glass is another I have enjoyed but is less of a life/death fantasy and more of a fai/magic sort ?
@Paul awesome! Sorry in advance because this may be a stupid question, but what do you mean it’s more fai/magic and not life/death fantasy? Doesn’t fai/magic fall easily under the fantasy realm?
@Dana yes all under the fantasy realm just that sabriel is more of a walk in death fantasy with magic that lots of people can take from compared to throne of glass which have Fai, Fairy’s and a completely different type of magic system ?
@Emma oh awesome! I was actually searching for a comparably good series because I honestly really haven’t found one! I read quite a bit of the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind and while the first book was seriously awesome, the rest of the series was not so much (I got 5 or 6 books deep and then called it a day lol). I also read The Mortal Instruments series which was decent but imo not as good as The Old Kingdom original trilogy. And I tried Seraphina which may or may not be a full series, but even if it was I wouldn’t read it honestly because the first one was purely awful lol.
I’m currently reading the mortal instrument series and I do want to get to the next lot, the clockwork ones and so on. I haven’t read the other ones you have mentioned. It’s so hard to find a series as good as one you love don’t you think? I would love to find one similar to the old kingdom series myself
@Emma nice! Although I really enjoyed most of the books, once I got through the entire TMI series, I was pretty done and didn’t want to go to the others. And yes! It’s sooo hard to find something equal to one you’ve totally fallen in love with! I have yet to find anything that I love as much as The Old Kingdom trilogy!
I have not read the whole series but Sabriel is an pretty amazing start.
Only read Sabriel really liked it. I plan on finishing the series.
Sabriel hooked me. SO amazing, loved it! But even though Lirael is basically completely unrelated, it’s almost better than the first!
I’ve read it awhile ago. I thoroughly enjoyed it. There’s a newer fourth book that I haven’t gotten around to yet.
Actually there’s a 4th and 5th out now! I’ve read the majority of the series with the exception of book #4. I was hoping to get into some convos about the books 🙂
Amazing series
Have you read Goldenhand?
Yes! Really enjoyed it x
Have you read all 5 books?
My personal favorite!
Have you read all 5 books?
I got the set in a hardbound edition from some Sci Fi Book Club I was in ages ago. I’ve read it a few times since.
@Krista nice!! What did you think of Goldenhand?
NVM just the original trilogy. Didn’t know about the other two actually. I’ll put them on my tbr.
@Krista oh gotcha. Just FYI, I skipped book #4 and was disappointed with book #5. That’s actually why I asked the original question. I was hoping to see what others thought of book 5
I thought something was off when you said Goldenhand. I only remembered reading the three. And it’s been at least five years since the last time.
From the sound of it, I might not read it. I read the first and third books of the fionavar tapestry but hated the third book so I never went back and read the second. I try not to skip books after that. Spoiled it and I had no desire to see where it went wrong.

@Krista actually someone else in the thread did just that and enjoyed it much more!
Do you have any other series that you love as much as this one? I’m on the hunt for something new, but fear that nothing will quite measure up lol.
Sara Douglass has the Wayfarer’s Redemption series that I never finished but really liked and will need to start over since it’s been years since I remembered. I also really enjoyed the Myst books. I’ve been more of a creator than a consumer over the past few years so my favorites aren’t recent. Lol
Its amazing
I have Sabriel on my shelves. Maybe I should bring it out? ?
Yess so good and the next 2 are awesome also!
Read everything to do with the whole Old Kingdom – some of my favourite books & I’d highly recommend to anyone xx
I love them too! Actually just finished Goldenhand and about to read Across The Wall! What did you think of Goldenhand?

have you managed to read the To hold the bridge story yet? if not let me know when you do!
@Chelsea I’ll PM you if that’s ok?
@Dana yes of course!
Awesome series!
I just put the first one on hold at the library!
Yes. I loved it conceptually but it kind of fell apart in every other regard, I felt. I never bothered with the fourth book.
I heard pretty poor reviews on the 4th book and wasn’t really interested in a prequel so I skipped it, but was still really excited about the 5th book but I felt it was kind of sadly disappointing unfortunately
Ok so for everyone who loved this original trilogy set, what’s another fantasy series that is similar that you love that I could get into next??
Maria V Snyder..poison studies.
Or Trudi Canavan – the black magician trilogy
Both amazing and favourites of mine.
@Sian I’ll look at those! Thanks!
Loved it. Wish i could buy it on kobo
I’ve read and own them ? one of my favs
Any other series you love just as much??
@Bobbi & @Jennifer, what did you both think of Goldenhand (the 5th installment)?
It wasnt the best but im stubbornly inlove with the whole series.
Bobbi M Brinks same here!! I’m almost sure he’ll release another, but sincerely hope it’s better than that!
Any other series you love as much as this one?
Too many to count lol i recommend D.M Cornish, Ransom Riggs, David Eddings, Taran Martharu, Lisa McMann. If you want a list of series i have collected and am slowly reading through let me know ill PM you
@Bobbi thank you! Yes please! All recommendations welcome! ?
Read the original trilogy and loved it. Started the fourth book but haven’t really gotten into it.
Awesome! Any other series you love just as much?

Yes!!!! Literally just finished Goldenhand ….. I love this series and such an easy read ?
Nice! How did you like Goldenhand? The original series is my absolute fav! Have you read any other series you like equally?
I thought it was great, equally as good as the first three and really brings the prequel (clariel) into it as well!! I can see this being another trilogy ? throne of glass is another I have enjoyed but is less of a life/death fantasy and more of a fai/magic sort ?

@Paul ahh gotcha. Well i love most everything fairy related so I may have to try it! Thanks for the tip!
It’s sooo good!!
Yay! I LOVE it too! My fav! What other series do you love just as much??
I loved uglies when I was younger, I read it at the same time. I also love the throne of glass series ? what about you?
@Emma oh awesome! I was actually searching for a comparably good series because I honestly really haven’t found one!
