I didn’t like them, either.

The World of Shadowhunters is really amazing! The Mortal Instruments is a bit of a drag, but The infernal devices and the Dark Artifices and everything else will leave you wanting more.

I love the Shadowhunter books so much, but so many people read them the wrong way and don’t get the full effects of the books! Be careful! The suggested ways to read the books are as follows:

Way #1
Infernal Devices
The Mortal Instruments
The Bane Chronicles (not necessary)
Shadowhunter Academy (VERY necessary)
The Dark Artifices (last book not out for two or years)
OR…
First three Mortal Instruments
The Infernal Devices
(Could probably read Bane Chronicles at this point or wait until you’ve finished TMI or skip it. Bane Chronicles is cute, but kind of just filler stuff)
Second half of The Mortal Instruments
Shadowhunter Academy
The Dark Artifices
OR…
First three Mortal Instruments
Clockwork Angel
City of Fallen Angels
Clockwork Prince
City of Lost Souls
Clockwork Princess
City of Heavenly Fire
The Bane Chronicles
Shadowhunter Academy
The Dark Artifices

All three way are correct and great ways to read the books. You just have to figure out which way works best for you! Just DO NOT finish The Mortal Instruments before you finish The Infernal Devices. The Infernal Devices takes place before The Mortal Instruments and City of Heavenly Fire spoils SO MUCH about The Infernal Devices.

Good luck if you decide to read them! They read are amazing imo. 🙂

Second way is the best. You don’t have to switch series in the middle and it’s the advised method

It’s beautiful… If you haven’t read it yet, please do…

Hmm I like The Mortal Instruments (tho I skipped some pages when I find it draggy) and I enjoyed The Infernal Devices alot too.
But for The Dark Artifacts, I find it like..hmm I don’t really enjoy it as much as TMI series..

I liked them — it was one of the first YA series I ever got into! A friend lent me City of Bones (kind of pushed it on me, actually ?) and I just kept reading after that. I really loved the world building, and the various characters.
I liked the movie but the new Netflix series is so cringe-worthy I can’t even ??

Elisa

Tash Elle haha same here! I just loved the characters so much, so every now and then I give it a shot but I shake my head, groan and roll my eyes so much during an episode that it becomes an exercise in frustration. Clary is really poorly cast, the whole thing is way OTT and cheesy and the directing is the most awful thing that was ever done to a book adaptation. Ever.

1
Elisa

Tash Elle I know — but I could put up with that if they hadn’t turned it into a joke. The over-acting is just the most cringe-worthy thing ever. It’s like watching a bad soap opera.

Loved this series! Cassandra Clare quickly became one of my favourite author’s after I read TMI

I…honestly didn’t like it…at all…couldn’t make it through the full series. It was just really bad to me. But to each their own.

Same. I read to #4 of TMI and it was just soooo bad that I decided to never bother with that author again.

Amanda

I got to I think the second chapter in #4 and gave up haha. I might give TID a try since I’ve heard that it’s better, but I’m not reading anything else by that author again. I’m glad I’m not the only one! Sometimes it feels like I am.

I love them! But i will warn you as much i love the series, i didn’t really like 4th and 5th books so much but 6th book is amazing so just power through because its so worth it. But this just my thoughts but if ever have chance read The Infernal devices series, thats my favorite shadowhunter series by far but new series TDA could be level with that all depends when new and final book comes out in 2 years. 🙂 But enjoy!

I preferred all the other shadowhunters books over tmi. And I think I’m one of the rare few who actually prefer the tv series… I think it’s mostly because I can’t stop staring at Matthew Daddario ?

I like the tv series too, it’s grown on me. Season 2 is such an improvement.

1
Candice

Yeah season 2 is so much better. You can tell they tried to learn from criticism of the show. Some of the actors aren’t great but I’ll praise Alan Van Sprag, Harry Shum jr and Emeraude Toubia for their acting this season any day of the week.

1
Cynthia

I LOVE the tv show! It’s a real twist from the books. And don’t get me started about Matthew Daddario ??

Loved the first three, the others I read just because I really enjoyed some secondary storylines and needed closure 😀 All in all, not the worst YA I’ve read, but granted, perhaps her other series is somewhat better in terms of character composition and development.

I ran through the first few books, but by the very last one I got bored and couldn’t keep up with all the storylines. Some characters were just uninteresting. Overall, the premise was really good though.

First three are pretty good, last three are just tacked on and unnecessary (they weren’t planned originally she just wrote them after the series became popular). Also, although they’re quite diverse there’s a lot of biphobia so watch out for that.

I stopped at book 3. Read it and it was enough. Don’t know, maybe I will read other three…. My hand doesn’t raise to read the rest. Its just…. Not that gripping. Though better than ‘After’ (I think)

I’m leaving a comment only because i am also curious as to what people say. I read book 1 and was mildly disappointed and have been debating continuing only because I want to get to the Infernal Devices series and then the Dark Artifices series.

I tried to read City of Bones but couldn’t get through it, so I decided to start with TID instead. Love that series! And after I finished it I wanted more of the shadowhunter world and ended up enjoying City of Bones more much than the first time, read the whole TMI, my favorites probably the third and sixth book. And then continued with TDA, that wow! It’s definitely becoming one of my favorites

2
Maia

City of Bones is my least favorite of her books. It was also the first book that she published. She’s improved SO MUCH since then. I give it a three stars. When every other one of her books deserves a four or five star rating in my book.
If you’re not feeling The Mortal Instruments series right now, you can start with The Infernal Devices series. There’s nothing wrong with that. I did. It is the better series overall between the two in my opinion, though The Mortal Instruments does get loads better, to the point where my second favorite of her books is City of Heavenly Fire, the last TMI book.
I know that I was glad when I powered through City of Bones and kept going. Cassandra Clare really knows how to connect series together in cool ways and she REALLY knows how to write an ending. But, I do understand that her books aren’t for everyone.
If you do decide to give the books another chance, here’s three good ways to read the books:
Way #1
Infernal Devices
The Mortal Instruments
The Bane Chronicles (not necessary)
Shadowhunter Academy (VERY necessary)
The Dark Artifices (last book not out for two or years)
OR…
First three Mortal Instruments
The Infernal Devices
(Could probably read Bane Chronicles at this point or wait until you’ve finished TMI or skip it. Bane Chronicles is cute, but kind of just filler stuff)
Second half of The Mortal Instruments
Shadowhunter Academy
The Dark Artifices
OR…
First three Mortal Instruments
Clockwork Angel
City of Fallen Angels
Clockwork Prince
City of Lost Souls
Clockwork Princess
City of Heavenly Fire
The Bane Chronicles
Shadowhunter Academy
The Dark Artifices

All three way are correct and great ways to read the books. You just have to figure out which way works best for you! Just DO NOT finish The Mortal Instruments before you finish The Infernal Devices. The Infernal Devices takes place before The Mortal Instruments and City of Heavenly Fire spoils SO MUCH about The Infernal Devices.
