Has anyone read The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini? Your thoughts please. Suitable for a sophmore in HS?

Wonderful book. It’s on many hs reading lists. There is one particularly graphic scene and some other scenes that allude to sexual violence, and it is serious subject matter. I think the great majority of hs sophomores could handle it, but you may want to have a convo about it in advance or when he/she is reading it.
It’s a fantastic book. One of my favorites.
As for age, I’m of the mindset of let people read what they want to read. I don’t sensor my child (with the exception of Erotica)
Same here! My kids went to Catholic school, where some books were banned. I bought each kid a copy of banned books and sent them in for free reading time. I had many meetings with Priest and principal. We were “that family who doesn’t listen”.
@Alison ?? I love that. I was never censored and I won’t do that to my kid.
@Laura when you start censoring, where does it stop? (Except porn, which has no value, but to corrupt and can lead to addiction and other issues)
@Alison I agree. My son is 9 and we talk open and honestly about things. He knows he can come to us with any question or problem and we won’t judge him
It’s a beautiful book, as is a thousand splendid suns. I think it depends on the teen. It’s graphic, violent, and stays with you for a while. I read it in my twenties and it kind of left a mark… I’d rate it R. IMHO
@Lulu what is IMHO
@Tray in my humble opinion ?
Love that book! I absolutely think it’s appropriate for a high schooler.
I was assigned this book in my sophomore honors English class
Brilliant. As is “A thousand splendid suns” All time classics
Excellent
I loved it. How old is a sophomore? Sorry I’m in England
It’s our 10th grade. 15/16
I think a mature 15/16 could handle it. There are some difficult sections, there’s abuse and there is rape but then there is in the news so as long as they are not too sensitive they will be ok. It is challenging but it’s an important book and it’s all in context. It made me cry and I’m 35 but the story made me cry not the uncomfortable bits x
they can always put it down if it becomes too much, and have a chat about it. They don’t have to pick it up again. That’s the beauty of books
Amazing! There is a graphic scene but I think a sophomore could handle it.
Some tough topics and definitely a very graphic scene.
It’s wonderful. I teach it in my Honors English 10 class
Absolutely. Beautifully written. Hard subject matters, but not too graphic.
One of the best books that l have ever read.
The main character was such a weak humiliating character and every wrong action he made caused me to cringe. I enjoyed the film more, because he was more likeable, but his decisions were just bad.
I couldn’t agree with you more! The main character was so deeply flawed and un-likable that I didn’t like the book despite how well it was written.
A modern classic —must read
My absolute favorite author.
“A Thousand Splendid Suns” changed my life.
“Kite Runner” is not for kids that had lived a sensored life. I would recommend it for a very mature high school student…. or anyone that needs humbling and/or wants deep insight into middle eastern culture.
It’s graphic and heartbreaking. I think it would be fine for mature sophomores. I read it finally last month and loved it.
One of the best books of all time. His other 2 as well.
Just started reading it but having difficulty getting into it.
Yes it is a wonderful book for young adults.
Yes and yes
Yes I am told by many
I read it when I was i think 16 for my English class. I thought it was ok, there was just one part I didn’t like at the time but other than that I loved it.
It is a fabulous novel with mature themes. It depends how mature your sophomore is.
Yes, love love, my son read it in high school and thought it was awesome. He decided to keep my copy on his book shelf❤️
A very good read,
Forget the film though….
Yes..A beautiful read…
Yes to both!
One of my favorites!!
A beautiful, poignant novel. One for our times.
Thank you everyone so much. Everyone’s comments really helped to clairfy a few things. @Desiree I really like your comment. It really laid heavy on my heart ❤
Yes but there is rape
Might not be for 10th grader, it’s a wonderful read but very graphic and harsh too
It is a brilliant book but agree with with the above. Maybe you could read it yourself and see if your comfortable with your son reading it
I read it several years ago. Though it was a great book. Well told. He’s a good writer.
Yes. I am reading it along with her since she told me she is uncomfortable reading it in class.
I think this is really great! I hope the teacher also did some work with the class before they dove into this book. I’m jealous your sophomore is letting you share this. Mine hasn’t told me about what he’s reading in ages. Good job both of you!
@Maegen. Thank you. We are a very open family
Ooh just bought today
Beautiful novel. Very descriptive. Some parts still haunt me due to the graphic nature. I think it depends on the maturity of your 10th grader. Definitely one of the few classics of our times
@Misty yes. It bothered her so I decided to re-read the book with her to where she left off then discuss the parts.
It’s a lovely book and I think it’s fine for a 10th grader
Fantastic book!
Really good story
B
Beautiful story
It’s a good book, I read it when my son had to read in 10th grade. Can be a little vivid
great book
Heart wrenching – I almost couldn’t finish it. I would say it’s suitable for Jr/Sr.
awesome, but extremely violent and with adult themes (like pedophilia, sodomy, rape etc…).
One of my favorites!
Not sure what age this is ( I’m in UK) but my 14 year old son devoured this book. I wouldn’t give to someone much younger though.
Our school gives it to the kids to read
My all time fav book❤
Yes!!!! Wonderful book!!
Good but has some very disturbing parts involving sexual assault and themes. Hard to stomach. May or may not be appropriate depending on maturity level of teen.
Great book just, be aware, it gets really really violently graphic. We do have it on our school required reading list suggestions for Sophomores.
Loved it

Good movie!
Great book for adults
It has some questionable sexual things in it, plus the main character witnesses the brutal rape of his male friend. Make sure your child can stomach something like that..
For an adult def ..
Good but so sad
My most favorite by far!
My fav book ever !
One of my favorite books.
Loved it but broke my heart
I found it a hard read and probably didn’t like it as much as most people. I preferred A Thousand Splendid Suns x

my school has it as reading for 9th grade english so my son who is in ninth grade is reading it now and his brother read it the same year – i was surprised it was picked for 9th grade but they both seem to like it
Brilliant book with saddening insights.
