Wonderful book. It’s on many hs reading lists. There is one particularly graphic scene and some other scenes that allude to sexual violence, and it is serious subject matter. I think the great majority of hs sophomores could handle it, but you may want to have a convo about it in advance or when he/she is reading it.

It’s a fantastic book. One of my favorites.
As for age, I’m of the mindset of let people read what they want to read. I don’t sensor my child (with the exception of Erotica)

Same here! My kids went to Catholic school, where some books were banned. I bought each kid a copy of banned books and sent them in for free reading time. I had many meetings with Priest and principal. We were “that family who doesn’t listen”.

Laura

@Alison ?? I love that. I was never censored and I won’t do that to my kid.

1
Alison

@Laura when you start censoring, where does it stop? (Except porn, which has no value, but to corrupt and can lead to addiction and other issues)

0
Laura

@Alison I agree. My son is 9 and we talk open and honestly about things. He knows he can come to us with any question or problem and we won’t judge him

Lulu

It’s a beautiful book, as is a thousand splendid suns. I think it depends on the teen. It’s graphic, violent, and stays with you for a while. I read it in my twenties and it kind of left a mark… I’d rate it R. IMHO

I loved it. How old is a sophomore? Sorry I’m in England

It’s our 10th grade. 15/16

1
Chrissy

I think a mature 15/16 could handle it. There are some difficult sections, there’s abuse and there is rape but then there is in the news so as long as they are not too sensitive they will be ok. It is challenging but it’s an important book and it’s all in context. It made me cry and I’m 35 but the story made me cry not the uncomfortable bits x

2
Chrissy

they can always put it down if it becomes too much, and have a chat about it. They don’t have to pick it up again. That’s the beauty of books

0
Annette

Amazing! There is a graphic scene but I think a sophomore could handle it.

Absolutely. Beautifully written. Hard subject matters, but not too graphic.
One of the best books that l have ever read.

The main character was such a weak humiliating character and every wrong action he made caused me to cringe. I enjoyed the film more, because he was more likeable, but his decisions were just bad.

2

I couldn’t agree with you more! The main character was so deeply flawed and un-likable that I didn’t like the book despite how well it was written.

My absolute favorite author.
“A Thousand Splendid Suns” changed my life.
“Kite Runner” is not for kids that had lived a sensored life. I would recommend it for a very mature high school student…. or anyone that needs humbling and/or wants deep insight into middle eastern culture.
