It’s good for some and horrible for others. I personally found it decent, but kinda annoying. I would try it to see where you land. Either way it is a classic.
It is good but definetly not eventful. It was ground breaking for its time but modern literature is a lot different now. We are spoiled with the books authors write these days. Go into it with those expectations and you could enjoy it.
As you can probably tell from the comments, this is a typically mixed review book. Yes, it is a classic and often used in literature classes in U.S. high school classes; there are many that love it and many that dislike it. This would be a good one for you to read anyway to see how you like it yourself with such mixed reviews! I personally loved it and it’s a very unique book with interesting narration that takes a little to get used to. 🙂
I think it’s one everyone should definitely read at some point, but pretty much everyone you meet is gonna have a different opinion on it. Some hate it some love it, so think it was ok. I thought it was ok but I’m glad I read it.
My brother hated it. I thought it was hilarious, even though I don’t think it was supposed to be. Also my class had an entire debate about whether the name Maurice was pronounced “Morris” or “Maw-REES” ?
You’ll love it if you relate to Holden. Most people don’t like it if they’re not between the ages of 14-20 just because of the stage he’s in in life and what he essentially represents.
The problem is many of us were forced to read it when it was starting to become outdated. However if you’re not forced and you take it at face value for the time period, you may make a better connection with it.
I read it for the first time in my mid-20s and loved it. In comparison, I also read The Great Gatsby and A Clockwork Orange at the same time and couldn’t stand them. I also read Flowers For Algernon (I went through a “books everyone else has read” phase) and loved it. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes ☺
I found it a “let down” when I read it when I was a teenager, but at different [older] ages, it has a different impact. A useful bellwether for the reader’s development.
I havent read it in a long time, but I remember my reaction to it more than the story itsself. About half way through the book I was so angry with how Holden behaves and thinks I almost chucked the book across the room and had to stop reading for the day ? but I remember getting to the end and being very glad I finished it
I loved it a few years ago, reread it a few weeks ago to make sure I love it as much as I did then. I do! I love it, its one of my favorite books of all time. I feel like its one of those books where you love it or you hate it
Honestly I wasn’t crazy about it until I heard my friend who loves it talk about all the symbolism and meaningful shit he saw in it that i never caught. My advice is to talk about it with people who love it as you read it to give you some insight!!
I loved reading this in 11th grade. And recently I listened to the audiobook (on youtube) and loved it differently. The story just flowed different for me. Holden is an angsty teen who cant seem to wrap his head around responsibility. It’s interesting to me to see how his mind works, avoiding conflict but also inciting it
The Catcher in the Rye is my all time absolute favorite book ever. I read it about once a year.
I think that literally ever single person can relate to this novel in some way. We have all at one point in our lives felt this angst of being alone and misunderstood and channeling it into believing that it is because everyone else is being fake or misleading. The symbolism throughout the book is one of the most enhanced still today and the amount of emotions that Salinger is able to solicit throughout the pages is surreal.
10/10 would recommend every single time.
I think it is so exciting to find people who have never read this book because all I can think is “You are in for such a treat!” I wish I could relive my first time reading Catcher in the Rye so I could fall in love with it all over again.
I read it when I was a teenager and I think generally it appeals to angst- filled teens but as an adult I don’t think I’d enjoy it. It’s probably worth reading just so you can cross it off your list though.
No. It’s not. ?
I loved it but many people don’t.
@Annie will be happy to share her thoughts!
It’s good for some and horrible for others. I personally found it decent, but kinda annoying. I would try it to see where you land. Either way it is a classic.
It’s just not
Are you over 23? Then no
It is good but definetly not eventful. It was ground breaking for its time but modern literature is a lot different now. We are spoiled with the books authors write these days. Go into it with those expectations and you could enjoy it.
It’s one of my favourite books.
Nooope. Worst book ever.
yes. not because it’s good, but because it’s hilarious.
I have always meant to read it
Nope. Hated it.
Absolutely not worst book I’ve ever read.
It’s one of my favorite books.
It’s awful?
It’s a wonderful book
It’s basically a trip gone bad. Avoid it.
Don’t do it to yourself
Read it 2 times. First time I hated, decided to try it again because it’s so beloved and didn’t find it so bad the second time around
I love it! It’s one of my favorites
Reading it now….. only because it’s my favorite actors favorite book. I’m not a big fan of classics.
Awful
Its a classic and lots of people love it. I despised Holden so much and I hate this book, but it’s very polarizing.
High school…you like getting teeth pulled lol

@Julia well said. I think it’s a great idea to just do it and come to your own conclusion.
I did, and would recommend it.
I enjoyed it but I was around 18 when I read it. I have not read it in many years so I am not sure if I would enjoy it as an older adult.

If you’re 15, I’d say read it! If older, you might get annoyed.

Yes! I loved it
I noped out about 20 pages in! I couldn’t stand Holden
I wouldn’t read it again
ah, i loved this book but I think yuo need to be 15 and have an English teacher imo
Love it.
It is good. Kind of making me want to reread it. I doubt I fully grasped it I’m high school.
Read it!
I’m currently re-reading it for the 15th time!
Yes it is, if not for the pleasure then for knowledge. it is discusses a lot and it is good to have opinion about it one way or the other ??♀️
I read it for school and couldn’t stand it. Would never read it again. Thought Holden was annoying
I liked it, it was different, but in a good way
I love it, if not only for the book but to understand the influence it has on people. You just have to read it and get your own opinion!
Yes!! It’s really good.
I hated it, but lots of people love it. I think you either love it or hate it.

I honestly find it an incredibly overhyped book. I always wonder if it’s because I’m not American

It’s beautifully written, but Holden is so such an annoying little shit. So read it for the writing, but not for the story.
I loved it a few years ago, reread it a few weeks ago to make sure I love it as much as I did then. I do! I love it, its one of my favorite books of all time. I feel like its one of those books where you love it or you hate it

Yes yes yes yes yes yes xx
I read it in high school and absolutely loved it. I’m not so sure I’d love it as much now, 20 years later.
I didn’t really care for the book.
Yessss I liked it alot
I did not enjoy it, think it was too hyped up
I recommend it. It takes some work to really understand the symbolism though
One of my favourites ❤
I was pretty meh about it, but I read it when I was in college. I think I would have liked it a lot more if I read it while still a teenager.
I hated that book more than I’ve ever hated any other book. Don’t torture yourself with it.

I’ve read it, just skip it.
I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED

It was the only book that I read in high school that I liked but I have a feeling if I read it now, I’d hate it
Read it a decade ago. I remember loving it back then. But I don’t recall the details.
I read it last month and ngl. I hated it soooo much it took me so long to get through. I wouldn’t recommend it
Yes and yes. But you might not like it at first.
Either you love it or hate it
