We read it for my book club, it was okay but not something I’d read again. Had I not ‘had’ to read it, I wouldn’t have and I don’t think I would have missed anything.
That is a really useful suggestion. I’ve been wanting to reread Mockingbird anyway, I’ll just wait til I get a copy of Watchman and read them together 🙂
Hahahaha Even if I didn’t already intend to read it, your comment alone would convince me to get a copy and have a look… If for no other reason, to see how her writing style changed and evolved over the years. 🙂
Responses have run the gamut from good to meh to eww… I’m not much better off than from before I asked… But it’s still great to see what people think of it 😉
I totally agree about the writing style seeming vastly different. Did you also find that the characters personalities changed at times too in relation to how they were portrayed in the original?
Yes. I mean, I get that they’ve evolved but eh. Scout is still a little oddly written to me. But atticuses character change kinda ticked me off. It doesn’t make sense.
@Ciera that’s exactly who I was thinking of, he just totally jarred. I know they moved on as you said but seriously? It was like a complete overhaul of character. Was a shame as people loved the characters for who they were.
Like I said when it was a part of group book club even though I read it a while before that… Yes, this book is different. Because the POV is different, because time passed and things happened and Jean Louise isn’t the same little girl she was in Mockingbird. Which is completely natural imho? And I actually LIKED that about Watchman. Mostly because I wanted to see what sort of people Atticus’s kids grew into.
The way people have been talking suggests that… I noticed everyone calling her Jean Louise and nobody is using Scout. I think I’m going to find I really miss Scout when I do get around to reading it :\
I read it. It was okay to me.
I did. I liked it, but didn’t love it. It is a slow read though, not very action packed, and is very character based rather than plot based.
I was very bored and disappointed.
It was a rather slow read. I didn’t love it.
good read
No . I’m still value to kill a mockingbird..im scared it’s not as good..
I read it and I was shaken, it was okay though not as good as To Kill A Mockingbird
Is it a sequel to Mockingbird?
It is
It reads like what it is, a first draft of To Kill a Mockingbird. I am glad I read it, but it is not even close to the perfection of TKAM.
We read it for my book club, it was okay but not something I’d read again. Had I not ‘had’ to read it, I wouldn’t have and I don’t think I would have missed anything.
I liked it.
I mean… I HAVE to have it, since I own a copy of “Mockingbird”… Just looking for a little taste of what I’m in for 😉
It’s good, but nowhere near as good as To Kill a Mockingbird!
I have it on my kindle but haven’t read it yet.
It was good. And kind of what I expected.
I was happy to meet the characters again, it’s a good book but in my memory I will keep To kill a mockingbird.
I read it… I wish I had read mockingbird again before reading this one since it was a little hard to get into
That is a really useful suggestion. I’ve been wanting to reread Mockingbird anyway, I’ll just wait til I get a copy of Watchman and read them together 🙂
I read it but didn’t enjoy it as much as To kill a mockingbird, it didn’t flow as well I felt as a sequel.
I read it – and didn’t like it 🙁
I liked it. You can’t compare it to To Kill a Mockingbird though.
It was ok. But not as good as Too Kill A Mockingbird
To Kill a mockingbird was one of my favorite books. That being said. I hated Go set a Watchman.
I read the book, wasn’t that impressed with it. We read this book for Book Club. Personally I wouldn’t read it again.
I couldn’t read past the first chapter . Didn’t like it at all. The writing style was different. Didn’t enjoy it in the slightest.
LOL

Hey you never know, you might enjoy it

Well, Scout’s name IS Jean Louise. It’s still the same person?
You just said she wasn’t the same person she was in Mockingbird… I speak metaphorically.
I meant it metaphorically as well. When you start reading you’ll know what I mean.
Right… I have the distinct feeling I’m going to miss Scout. That doesn’t mean I won’t like Jean Louise, of course.
I have yet to finish it. I had a good idea that it would never be as good as TKAM, but I thought it would be better than it is. I will finish one day.
I haven’t read it yet.
It was a bit of a shock but then I realized the importance of what was happening, read it carefully.
I have read it and I would strongly not recommend it!
Hahaha I can’t NOT read it… Mockingbird was too much a part of my teen years for me to ignore another book by the same author 😉
I just finished reading it. I loved it more than I love To kill a mockingbird, I don’t know why.
