Oh… I’ve read ALL the things! He was my favorite author, as a teenager. I used to like him better than King… but he went a bit wayward with his later books. Still… some were impeccable. Hideaway. Odd Thomas series. Door to December.

In fact, when I watched Stranger Things, all I could think of was Door to December which I read 20 years ago.

I love his older books. The newer ones seem to be ghost written. I recommend The Watchers, From The Corner of his Eye, One Door Away from Heaven, Lightning, and Sole Survivor (I named my daughter Nina after a character in this book). Tick Tock is goofy and light hearted. Odd Thomas Series is wonderful. Life Expectancy is beautiful and scary and silly. Twilight Eyes stands out to me. Any of his thriller/ horror books are good but those ones I mentioned have beautiful luminous prose. They are absurd and scary and funny and beautiful and magical just like real life is.

Probably already been said, but I loved Odd Thomas!! It’s a series, and there was a movie based on the first book. I saw the movie first not knowing it was based on a book. I loved the movie and the book. The writing style of the book is so unique that, even already knowing the basic storyline, it was still a great read.

I find him variable – at one time he was my favourite author in the vein of Stephen King as when he writes well he is brilliant but sometimes it is obvious the books are written to a deadline or to make money as he once admitted. Also, the books can be formulaic so I don’t recommend reading too many of them one after another. My favourites are Whispers, Watchers, Phantoms, Lightening, Night Chills, Strangers, Twilight Eyes. and Cold Fire. I have read others also but these are the ones I remember most!

I consider myself a Koontz expert. I’ve read everything – and I do mean EVERYTHING. The two Santa’s Evil Twin young adult books. The books “written” by Trixie, his Golden Retriever. Books written under his pen name, Leigh Nichols.
I’ve seen several people here posting that his work is dark – and sometimes it does take dark turns. But the wonderful thing about Koontz is that, even when the book is dark, there is ALWAYS that glimmer of light. There is always hope.
My three favorite Koontz books are Watchers, Strangers and Lightening – in that order. The Frankenstein books are fantastic – except for Three, which sucked, but he made up for it with four. The new Jane Hawk series is very good, also.I could name more – but I’d have to go through is bibliography (which is lengthy) I do know that there are at least 70 titles as I counted the list in his latest work, The Whispering Room.
A Koontz book tends to draw you in in the first few pages, and they don’t let you go till the tale is told. His characters are magical beings brought to life by an expert storyteller – and months, even years! – later, you will find yourself occasionally wondering what Travis, or Nora, or Einstein, is doing.
King can tie a plot up in knots. But Koontz can build characters that are just as complex and multi-layered as any real person.

I really like Dean Koontz. I might be a little biased though, because I’m a writer and also write similar type suspense novels. 🙂
