Has anyone read A Wrinkle in Time? Would kids 10-12 years old age love it?

I’m considering reading A Wrinkle in Time to my 12 and 10 year olds in anticipation of the new movie coming out this spring. Has anyone read this? Would kids this age love it? I don’t want to struggle through it. I can read it on my own, but if my kids would love it, I’d be happy to read it to them!

my 8 and 10 year olds love it. I think they’ve both read it at least 3 times apiece

Oh thank you! I had a friend tell me it was super hard to follow and her kids got bored and confused…glad to know that wasn’t your experience!

gosh no! They get something new out of it every time they read it. THere is a graphic novel version too if you’re worried. I tihnk Miss 8 started on that when she was 6 or so.

YES! DEFINITELY READ it to them! And DEFINITELY before the movie. I expect there will be some of its essence lost in the movie.

YES! I first read it in the 5th grade and it’s still one of my favs. Used it as a classroom novel when I taught 6th grade. It was rough for my lower readers but they liked it anyway. Met Madeleine L’Engle on her 80th bday at a bookstore in Union Square. She was as wonderful as you imagine.

I never read it until I was an adult, and it was honestly a revelation for me.

This is the book that turned me into a reader. I was about 10. It also has four sequels about the same family.

It was mandatory reading for me in the 7th grade so I think it would be good for their age. Thinking about reading it again myself

I read it in 4th grade because my wonderful teacher that year decided that my reading group would find the standard reading book at the time boring ( so we finished it early) and had us read A Wrinkle in Time as a group. It was the best thing ever. That summer break, I read on my own several more of L’engle’s works!

I absolutely loved this book as a kid! To this day, it’s one of my favorites. I read it to my daughter when she was 8 or 10. That’s a perfect age — for both of you! Enjoy!

I enjoyed it when I was about eleven or twelve, probably your children will too if they like fantasy. Especially if they are girls, the heroine is a very brainy girl who is brilliant at maths.

I reading in grade school and loved it! Only my 9 year old has read it so far. She read it when she was 7, getting ready to turn 8. She loved it, and is getting ready to read it again before the movie comes out.

I remember reading it again and again and loving it. My granddaughter read it when she was 9 in a graphic version….read that about 12 times and then on to the regular print book. She loved it!

Do it! As a middle school librarian, I can tell you this is perfect for them. In fact you may want to read the entire set! Read before the movie. This way you can talk about the difference and what might be missing

I read it out loud to my boys at that age. I then found them ‘sneaking’ it to read ahead. But the best part was when they started using words like tesseract as a pretend dirty word. Or called the mean boy Louise the Larger.

I read it for the first time last week. I believe it is considered juvenile literature. My daughter read it as a child and has reread it many times since. I think it would be good as a read aloud/read together with your children. Lots to talk about. I loved it as an adult and wish I had read it sooner.

After you read A Wrinkle in Time you should read a book called WHEN YOU REACH ME by Rebecca Stead. It’s about a young girl growing up in the 70s who is obsessed with Wrinkle. To say more than that would spoil the surprises this book holds — it’s one of the most wonderful things I’ve ever read, and perfect for any reader from around 9 up.

Yes, I have added When You Reach Me to my Library wish list. I thought I would finish the L’ Engle series first though. Would you agree, is that a good idea?

My sister loved this book after having read it in elementary school. I’m finally reading it now (misplaced it), and can see that your children depending on their interests should enjoy it. The narration is engaging and the characters are compelling.
