Has anyone ever read “Go Ask Alice”? I read it to pieces as a teenager in the 90’s.

I read it in my early twenties. Actually finished it as I sat waiting for a rock concert to begin. I remember the book and don’t remember who was playing at the concert.

Just got a used library copy for $5. New copies are selling from $277! Jeez…this is the kind of thing that makes me hoard books. What if I can’t get them again?!

Crazy! I probably have my original copy packed away of both books.

It’s a long time since I’ve heard about Go Ask Alice – read it in the 70s when I was about 15/16.

What was it like to read it at that time (closer to the era it took place in)?

@Bron It was pretty alien to me, as I was living in N.Ireland in the middle of the Troubles and America was like another world. Plus I had no knowledge of drugs at all. The culture described in the book was way outside of my life experience but was fascinating because of the vast differences between America and N.Ireland. It stuck in my mind though

Bron Treanor I was very young and it scared me. I don’t remember a lot of it but it did make an impact. Maybe I should read it again now and see how I feel about it.

It definitely made an impact on me. I may have been more fascinated than scared, I think, but I was definitely immersed. I think I love books written in diary form. Catherine Called Birdy was another diary-style book set in the 1500’s that I read to pieces.

Ugh, you mean, the scare-tactic teen book? It was ridiculously inaccurate and I couldn’t read more than a quarter of it for that reason. You want similar books that are actually good? Check out anything by Ellen Hopkins.

Haha, yeah, that one :). I read it a couple of times (ok, like ten) before I found out that it was basically propaganda. Thank you, early 2000’s internet! …That being said, it still an incredibly immersive and heartwrenching book. It’s not a complete throwaway. Any suggestions for a specific Hopkins?

Crank is definitely her most popular book, but I personally think that Impulse and The You I’ve Never Known are her best works. They deal drugs, mental illness, abuse, and whatnot.

@Kaitlin Thanks!

I think it’s very appropriate for young pre teens. At least it was for me.

I read it. When it was first published, it was claimed to be a real diary of someone named Alice but later on, it was reclaimed as fiction. I liked it, and the idea of using literature to raise awareness with regards to Drug addiction.

@Bron lol I was Alice’s sister, Alex. It was a small part, I don’t really remember having many scenes except for the very end.

Fave, fave book ever. I have recently discovered some similiar diaries by Anonymous. A couple more you might enjoy include Lisa, Bright and Dark and I never Promised You a Rose Garden. Also check out Ellen Hopkins YA books. Absolutely amazing.

“You can’t ask Alice anything anymore” this was one of my favourite books when I was a teen. I haven’t read it in years but now I want to again.
