Have you read his sandman series? It’s a graphic novel, but so worth it!

I haven’t managed to read all of his books yet, but from what I have read I would have to say he is one of the most gifted authors on this planet!

Oh yes, especially the Sandman stories, Neverwhere (I used to live in central London and knew all the places) and his short stories.

Nope. I liked American Gods and I had to listen to it by audiobook.
There is something about his writing that’s off to me.

That’s interesting. We’re all different.

@Kathy the characters in his stories lack the right sort of reaction. These insanely magical things happen and the characters don’t seem to be surprised or even react to it in a realistic fashion. It kills.the story for me.

Susan

That’s an interesting point. I’d not realised it but I think you’re right; fortunately, it doesn’t throw me out of the story.

NEVERWHERE! Anansi boys and good omens are tied for second place.

Susan

Or you could try Odd and the Frost Giants – it’s a novella really but a good intro. And you can find some of his short stories on the internet

I love his work. I first read a short story “How to talk to girl at parties” then into his short story compilations like “Smoke and mirrors”. I really recommend him as a way to introduce people to literature, especially teens 😉

I’m 300pages in American Gods. Nothing much happening I’m getting so bored and annoyed. Im just not FEELING ANYTHING powerful or soul nourishing!! Why is that?

Julia

That is probably the one book by him I don’t like.

2
Lauren

There is a lot of back story there to fully appreciate it. So, no worries.

Youcef

@Lauren so should I keep reading?!

D.M.

If a book does not move you, if there are characters you could care less about, if the plot is meaningless to you, drop the book. There are so many books that will take you on a meaningful journey.

2
Lauren

@Youcef I agree with @D.M.. You should leave it if you’re not into it.

Lauren McKim Flattery I already know that..its just that I’m kinda disappointed and angry bcs Neil Gaiman wrote one of the closest books to my heart The Ocean at the End of the Lane!! It’s so brutal to be disappointed by one of your fave authors this way.

I find him very uneven. Some of his books are just wonderful, but there are others I can’t even finish.

I enjoyed America Gods the second time I started it. For the most part I find his characters to be too passive but his world building is excellent

I loved The Graveyard book, but got hopelessly done in by the lake at the end of the road book (or whatever the real title is)! I shall try Good Omens…
