I wouldn’t call it dark. It was eh. The writing is atrocious but I made it thru the original 3 because I wanted to know how it ends
I have. Not that great. I preferred the Crossfire series by Sylvia Day. But check out Penelope Douglas. The Fall Away series is my favorite but all her books are a but darker and gritty.
My mom read crossfire. They were good she said. I could always give you a list of her authors if you like

Kushiel’s legacy is way better if you want great story, dark, sexy and bdsm related. The first trilogy (start with kushiels dart) follows a different character than the second but sets up the entire world for all three sets of Terre d’Ange books. They’re so good.

I came across this book by accident in a Sale bin and the cover looked so good! I LOVED IT.
I read it and liked it. My mom read it and fell in love and now all she reads are those types of books
I made it 100 pages then DNF it….the writing and story line are atrocious for the subject of the book
I agree with @Julie that’s an amazing series and the writing is phenomenal . Absolutely on my list of top 20 .
It’s also a way more accurate depiction of bdsm lifestyle.
And it’s not entirely bdsm . There’s actually a story in it so it’s the best of both worlds and makes it feel much more realistic .

It’s pretty poorly written and not that dark in my opinion.
I liked the black lace book “90 Days of Genevieve.” 50 ripped it off pretty obviously. It’s a BDSM romance.
Anne Rice’s “Sleeping Beauty” trilogy is the OG. Fairly graphic BDSM. I was unsatisfied by the romance aspect, though.
The “Subs Club” books are a delightful BDSM series, if you want something gay. They aren’t particularly dark, though.

I like the Southern Vampire Mysteries and Queen Betsy series.
I really enjoyed it, a guilty pleasure as the the writing wasnt amazing but it’s a fast read. Not dark though when I think if dark. If you like fantasy and I’d try Karen Marie Moning’s fever series or Laurell K Hamilton’s Merry Gentry series. I also loved Light world/ Dark world series by Jennifer Armintrout (I think) I remember it being dark but it’s been a lot of years since I read it.
Somewhat ironically, Jennifer Armintrout hates Fifty Shades and wrote a massive series of brilliant takedowns, chapter by chapter.

J d robb series. Doesnt have to be read in order but it definetly helps for background continuity
I’m sure there are better books out there for what you are looking for. They were horrible for a whole variety of reasons.
