I used to be all for paperbacks and paperbacks only. But now it’s hardcovers. Not sure how that changed over night. But I feel like hardcovers look aesthetically pleasing on shelves and in hands ?

Paperback- they don’t leave a lot of deep marks on your face in the morning after falling asleep while reading- which I do all the time.

Paperback. Hardcovers may look a little nicer on display, but they are so much less convenient for reading. They are heavier, bulkier, less portable, and the dust jacket is forever getting in the way or lost.

I think it depends on the book/binding. As a collector I prob lean toward leather for longevity, but my favorite copy of Brave New World is paperback. BTW I hate e-books, so they’d be last on my list (behind audio books haha).

Both. I usually can’t wait for the paperback if it’s a book I wanna read. But I love paperbacks cause they fit better in my purse and not so heavy. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and tend to carry too many books around with me. But hard covers are so beautiful.

Trade paperbacks but not mass market

0
Reply
Sheilah

@Angie those are called trade backs. I love them, too. So portable and not as heavy as a hardback.

0
Angie

Trade paperbacks are issued in the same size and format as a hardcover edition of the same book. Unlike the smaller and less expensive mass-market paperback, trade paperbacks often are identical to a hardback book, even having the same page numbers . I know this because I work at a book store.

0
Sheilah

@Angie I also worked in a bookstore (a few, actually). I understand the similarities between trade and hardbacks as well as the differences between trade and mass markets. When I first read your comment I didn’t see that you had said, “trade paperbacks”, I only saw paperbacks. My mistake.

Melissa

I love a heavy hardback book. But i can only afford the paperbacks lol

Reply
Michele

@Melissa You can get hardcovers in lovely condition at thriftbooks, Half Price Books, The Dollar Tree, thrift shops, etc. I just can’t read paperbacks (or maybe I’m just a hardcover snob!)
