I just discovered Ivan Doig a few months ago. I liked his writing.

@Glenna, this is the first of his that I’ve read, I like him too! What have you read, would you recommend any others?

I read The Whistling Season. It was very good! When I borrowed it from the library I didn’t know it was part of a series — fortunately, it’s the first (of three). I just read the description of the one you’re reading, and I’ve got to read it too. Sounds wonderful!

Ooh, I saw The Whistling Season at my library. I’m going to add that one to my list. Thank you!

Random book sale purchase. It actually sucked me in far faster than I expected.

I read this one several years ago. Pretty good.

Only annoying part is that I already have it totally figured out. So now I’m reading to see if I’m right.

Yeah, you probably do. Those type books are usually fairly predictable. 🙁

If the author took longer for Eliza to find Gabe’s written story, she could have totally surprised us.

Phenomenal book! I love the narrator.

I also have I Am The Messenger if you want to borrow it. I haven’t read it yet. I’m hoping it’s as good as The Book Thief!

(And don’t bother with The Book Thief movie… it’s slow as molasses. Well done, but utterly boring.)

This book touched my soul so deeply, I don’t even have words. So I’ll borrow Tara’s…phenomenal.

It’s a great adjective, isn’t it? I am also partial to “astounding!” 🙂

So far so good. Still heavy on the “over hip lingo” but I’m trying to ignore it lol

Ohh what’s this one about? I like the cover. Lol (I can’t tell you how many books I’ve bought just because I thought they were pretty. Oops!)

It’s the first of a trilogy. Amazon had the Kindle edition on sale for $1.99 and I read the first line of the description — “an epic and gripping tale of catastrophe and survival” — and thought it sounded good. What’s $1.99, right? Then I found out that a Goodreads group read had just started, to promote the release of the final book, so I joined it. THEN I find out there are vampires! (Another genre I avoid completely.) But so far, 14 chapters in, it has proved itself. Cronin is a fantastic writer. I’m enjoying it tremendously.

If you should ever want to try it, I would love to have a sort of mini-group read with you!

Ewww Vampires. But you say it redeems itself? I admit to reading Twilight, and disliking it enough to never bother with the following books. Lol I’ll go read the blurb. You and I tend to like the same stuff. 🙂

I agree on the “ewww!” I have never read any vampire novels, not even Anne Rice. (I can’t say that any more, can I?) This isn’t that kind of story, though. There’s a little girl named Amy who is destined to save the world. That grabs me right there!

Sounding better…

Afterworlds was really good. Not sure if it’s your style, though.

And no vampires in it. Lol

Same here! It’s helped me know what to keep an eye out for at the sales. 🙂

Afterworld does sound good. My library has the ebook so I added it to my wish list. Thanks!
