I read it in high school for class. Over 30 years ago!! Wow, I’m old. I remember I really liked it even as a teenager. It was a little different for me to read that kind of story at a young age but it was interesting and good. I may have to re read that book. It would probably be one of three books I ever re read. (Scarlet letter , Fahrenheit 451 and Wuthering Heights would be the books I would re read. )
I also reallIy liked it…a story really representative of the times and the behaviors of people in those times….I also read this book 48 years ago but it stayed with me as I can still remember character names and all…
Yes!! We also had to read Animal Farm. What was that all about? Like why ?? It was such a weird book for me. My twin sister got to read better books in her class. The Outsider and Lord of the Flies. And she even got to dissect a frog in science class. My class was so boring.
A lot of (typically) high school books cover difficult topics, and sometimes are difficult to read, but I think they enrich us, and encourage critical thinking. The Scarlet Letter talks about injustice, and how to deal with public shaming, bullying, and a lot of stuff we have to deal with as teenagers, not to mention as adults. I didn’t enjoy reading it at the time, but I think even then I appreciated the subject matter for what it had to teach.
I was surprised to enjoy reading Grapes of Wrath (even though it’s a very sad book), Of Mice and Men (Steinbeck really wrote some sad stuff), White Fang, Catcher in the Rye (I think that might be worth a re-read, given all the subtext), Lord of the Flies (another creepy-sad book, but good story), and The Great Gatsby (although this one was confusing).

I agree. I liked it in high school. One of the best things they made us read in my opinion

I read it ages ago in high school and did not enjoy it at the time. Who knows, maybe I would like it now.
It is great to have so many views on it
I have just started reading the first two chapters, and yeah it’s been a great read. It’s deep and disturbing!
I’ve read and taught it. Great novel. Still has resonance within certain communities.
That’s cool. Where did you teach it?
@Cornelia in the UK, at A-Level
@Ann cool 🙂
I read it in school—it wasn’t my favorite, but it was okay
I don’t remember liking it much 🙁

@Magda John Steinbeck could be so beautiful, yet sad
Love it. I used to teach it in community college Intro to Lit classes.
That is cool
It’s one that people can connect to when their life doesn’t go according to plan.
@Ricky true
I also read it in school and loved it.
Guys I just love your different reading experiences
