It is so so over hyped! It was a Richard and Judy book here in the UK and that made for one very lucky author! It is absolutely nothing special at all. The film is actually better as the alcoholic woman is more likeable in the film.
I enjoyed it. Although the main character is difficult to like, I wanted to follow her journey. It wasnt a gripping thriller, but a real life gritty drama from the eyes if a flawed woman.
If you have a big publisher behind you then you’re halfway there. Richard & Judy book club costs a LOT of money…it’s not luck or talent as some presume. A big publisher with a big marketing budget can make all the difference. The rest of us writers, with smaller publishing deals, can only dream of that magic sticker ?
it was ok. not worth the hype in my opinion. I likely would’ve liked it better had I read it before the hype (not had my expectations raised to a point that it just couldn’t deliver against those expectations )
I jumped on that bandwagon when the book first came out and I was so disappointed in the book. I have not seen the movie yet so I am not sure if that is better or not!
So after all those who weren’t so impressed like me, what should I read next as a great page turner? My fave books are Me Before You, Bella Mafia, Time Travellers Wife, Her Fearful Symmetry…
Wow @Laura we are book soulmates. Loved her fearful symmetry, me before you and time travelers wife. Have not read Bella Mafia, but I will next! I love Jodi Picoult, Anita Shreve and Chris Bohjalian.
Anthony Lane gave it a devastating critique in “The New Yorker”: ” Half the sentient beings on earth appear to have read the book, alleging with near-unanimity that they couldn’t put it down. I couldn’t pick it up. I tried, frequently, but it always fell from my grasp, tugged down by the dead weight of the prose.”
I never read (or not read) a book because of “hype”. I read if I like the sound of the story, and take it on its own merits. Girl on the Train was okay, not the best book I’ve ever read but far from the worst. Don’t set yourself up by setting too much store by hype, and you won’t be disappointed 🙂
I’m gripped reading it at the moment brilliant book so far.
Just finished it…thought it was ok but guessed the ending early on… (don’t worry I won’t say any more @Jenny!)
I loved it 🙂 made me want to have a drink though haha
me … it was ok.
Hated it
Didn’t like it
Gave up halfway through
I know exactly what you mean. I gave up on it , really didn’t enjoy it.
I find this with a lot of books that are hyped up to the eye balls. ‘Girl on the Train’ was OK, but it wasn’t a book that blew me away.
Just average

The movie was better then the book.
liked the story but disliked most of the characters. glad i read it tho.
Hated it
Rubbish read & a waste of good reading time
I enjoyed it – book better than the film too ?
I didn’t like it
Didn’t like it.

I liked it. Unlikeable main character presented a challenge, but that made the story unique.
I agree. Both she and the story developed together
Yes, I think it was well written. It took the reader into some dark corners of the mind.
I thought the book was so much better than the film.
I probably won’t see the film- don’t want to be disappointed.
Boring
Loved it
Loved it!
I didn’t enjoy it at all but I did finish it

I didn’t feel the hype either, it was more of a slow burner for me. Towards the end i started to enjoy it more.
I didn’t love the book and I really didn’t like the movie.
Yeah me x
I thought it was just ok. Had the opportunity to see Paula Hawkins speak this week which was interesting but not amazing.
She herself really enjoyed the movie which I thought was interesting
I haven’t yet read this although it’s currently in my book cabinet. I have seen the film and loved it
Book dragged on,but I finished it
I didn’t mind it but I know a lot of people didn’t enjoy it.
Very average.

I think it was a great premise, an amateurish execution
It started so well, then got kinda predictable then I was disappointed ?
Didn’t like the characters, or plot. Dislike.
Terrible…. ?
Not a fan.
I could not get into it. Put it down and have not looked at it since
Not a book I’d recommend. Too slow paced after initially seeming good.
Didn’t like it at all
Was very disappointed.
Only book I’ve ever read where I preferred the film! Very disappointing!
I jumped on that bandwagon when the book first came out and I was so disappointed in the book. I have not seen the movie yet so I am not sure if that is better or not!
I did not like it

11.22.63 by Stephen king. Amazing time travel story. One of my fave ever books.
May I suggest ‘I Let You go” or ‘A;
Sorry about that…finger fart….I also loved ‘All the Light We Cannot See’
Wow @Laura we are book soulmates. Loved her fearful symmetry, me before you and time travelers wife. Have not read Bella Mafia, but I will next! I love Jodi Picoult, Anita Shreve and Chris Bohjalian.
All the Light We Cannot See was beautiful. Or The Book Thief.
Yes to both the above!
Didn’t like it.
Yes it’s rubbish! Poorly written
I didn’t enjoy it :/

Dead weight of the prose ?
I couldn’t pick it up!

I couldn’t get through the first chapter….
At least it was better than the book. https://bouquetsbrickbatsreviews.com/2016/10/11/the-girl-on-the-train/
I didn’t love it.
It was a snooze fest.
