Are u going to set one next year?

1
PaulaQuestion author

Nope. I found that when I set a goal, I’d be reading more just to get my number up. I’d rather just read when I can. sometimes I’ll go days without reading

Jenny

Yup I am not at 59/55 and still reading

My original Goodreads goal was 120. I’m on book 142. But, the last few years I’ve read 180, 190. But I wasn’t working then.

how???

Make that 194. Can’t work due to chronic illness and I hardly watch TV. I have always read quickly, and when I could. When I worked I read on the bus, in the evening, at lunch.

1
Siobhán

I have to read to fall asleep usually. I need to read more or less daily.

1
PaulaQuestion author

I miss the nights when I could stay up late reading lol

1
Siobhán

Sometimes I can’t sleep and I can’t read all night. Would much rather be working or studying and leading a normal life but hey, I least I have books!

haha…nope. I failed big time. I’m at 35 or 36 (can’t remember). My original goal was 101 (a special number for me). When I realized I wouldn’t even come close b/c of all life has handed me this year, I cut that in half to just 50 but I still won’t meet it. But I’m not stressed about it like I might have been in years past.

The past 2.5 years have been unbearably rough. I’m happy to have met my ONE HUGE undocumented goal…to keep reading. Over the years, I go thru up and down phases where I binge read and then I burn out or get too busy and stop for months (or more) at a time. At one point, it even lasted a few years.

I hadn’t realized until recently that that was a HUGE contributing factor in my long-fought battle with depression (that I had essentially stopped reading for so many years with anything remotely resembling regularity). Now in the face of a long, slow-moving divorce and the loss of most of my animals, and some legal and financial struggles,

I have gone back to the way I was through my youth up through college….making sure I’m reading EVERY SINGLE DAY, even if only for short snippets on uber busy days. That (and new anxiety medications) are helping SO much. Unfortunately, things are still pretty crazy adjusting to my new normal (and busy schedule) so reading’s been much slower than I had hoped…but I’m just glad to be back to it, with a vengeance. 🙂

Haven’t decided if I’ll set a new goal for next year or just go with the flow and see where I end up. No need to put added pressure on myself but it can be a fun challenge…but I may just continue working on my new easy, breezy attitude (well, okay, maybe not quite there yet…but work in progress!). <3

As long as you are reading & happy that you are reading, that’s half the battle I think, take care of you @Chris x

1
Chris

@Paula Thanks! I hadn’t realized HOW long I had gone w/o reading and, even when I started up again, I wasn’t consistent enough. I’m back to carrying my kindle and a book all the time and always have something underway. I feel more like me…the girl who spent ALL her spare time with her face buried in a book. For a long time, my vision was a huge problem but that has improved so I’m back to voracious immersion! 🙂

I’m definitely reading a lot less as well, for some of the same reasons and others. Reading is such good therapy!

1
Paula

@Chris I’m glad to hear, reading does help I think x

I am super close to my goal of 52 for the year. I just started 47 today. I had a very bad year, so barely read the first 7 months. So most of these books have been from July-December.

That’s incredible! I wonder how you pull this off ?

2
Martine

@Chirag, I read fast and I proofread manuscripts, which means deadlines and even faster reading ?

2
Chirag

I have done that only 2 or 3 times, and yeah pressure is enormous from the authors ?

2
Martine

@Chirag, yup, but I love it nonetheless ?

I set my goal at 25, and I am 4 short. I might make 22. I just don’t get enough reading time.

Yes I’ve passed it. I pass my goal every year so the next year I set my goal to be what I actually read the year before and then I pass that. I’m wondering where I will get to a point when I can’t meet the goal.
