For those of you who listen to audiobooks, I’m just starting out with one and I find it so hard. How do you keep from getting distracted?

I only listen to audiobooks when I’m driving. For me that’s the only time I can focus on it. And I’m driving 2+ hours a day so it’s a good use of the time. I know other people like to listen while they are doing menial tasks like cleaning.

@Jessica I’m trying to listen to one right now. My boyfriend is driving and we have about 3 hrs left. I just have trouble with my mind wandering. Then I have to skip back to the parts that I missed.

I understand completely. I have to be doing something else like driving to keep my mind from wandering. I can’t listen as a passenger. I’m not sure why.

I use them to fall asleep. I can mostly pay attention in the car if I’m the one driving.

Do something ‘brainless’ like farm heroes, the dishwasher… it does get better but I often relax to the point of snoring if I only listen ?

I tend to listen to them when I have nothing major to do: when walking/being driven somewhere, when falling asleep, or when I can just sit there focusing on the words. I tend to try to focus on what is being said, almost as though I am reading it in my mind. Which is a horrible explanation of what I do! I can’t listen if I am doing anything that requires more than minimal focus, as I am fully paying attention to the words.

Drive or play a coloring app. It’s mindless
Enough that I don’t lose attention.

I started up listening and reading at the same time for some time so I got used to it. Now I sometimes just sit in the dark and listen but mostly I commute, clean, cook, paint or play on my phone and I don’t get distracted. Although if the book is really complex and heavy, I might still have to go back sometimes

I started listening to series where I had already read the first book so I knew the major characters already. I generally listen to them when I’m driving, working on a puzzle or cleaning

Anything that doesn’t require intense focus I can do while listening to audiobooks. I listen at work, driving, and at home. Some narrators are also better than others. Some books are more interesting than others as well.

I listen in the car. But mostly while I’m walking places. I also listen to try and fall asleep and the key is setting the snooze alarm in case you wake up several hours later! ALSO! I tend to listen to books that I’ve already read so if I do miss something I haven’t REALLY missed anything (I listen to a LOT of HP!)

I started out listening to favorite books that I had already read. Then graduated to others and haven’t looked back. I like it almost as much as reading. Key is a good narrator as well as a good story. I’ll either play mahjong online which is mindless or do Sudukos. Or drive. Sometimes while cooking. Give it a chance.
