I’ve had a Sony and several Kindles. I like the kindles. Amazon’s books store isn’t going anywhere, and they have a huge selection.

I have the Oasis currently, but their paperwhite model is super popular.

I have a kindle, I find it easier as I also have the app on my iPhone so I can sync them both up, so if I’m out and about I can continue the book I’m reading if I get a spare half an hour. ?

I don’t know if kobo’s are different now but when I had mine years ago, you couldn’t use it while it was charging. I found that annoying. It also stopped charging all together after a year so I switched to a kindle. No problems with it and you can read while charging ?

kindle but not the one for $80 as it doesn’t have a backlight! unless you use a book light or a bedside lamp it’s not really good for reading in the dark and i was super disappointed when i found out it didn’t have one AFTER i had purchased it and didn’t see that that wasn’t a feature in any reviews

I’m also looking to purchase one. I’ve read that the Kindle Paperwhite international version works better for Canadians. Downloading options are less if not the international version. At least that’s my understanding …perhaps I’m wrong if so I hope someone will enlighten me

I’ve got a kindle, but since I live in the Netherlands and don’t have a credit card (amazon doesn’t accept ideal unfortunately), I have to stick with the free books for the time being. So, for me the Kobo would probably have been a better choice

I have 5 Kindles from the fancy Oasis to the brand new Paperwhite that includes Audible & is waterproof but my favorite out of all so far is Kindle Voyage. It’s pretty small & thin which fits into one hand very nicely & that’s even with the case on.

If one buys an international version from the US would a kindle not be ok? I read somewhere the kindle international version is better for Canadians…any thoughts?

I have a Kobo Mini, This was my first digital reader. Then I got the Nook Tablet, because I wanted to be able to go on the internet. My last digital reader I bought is the Kindle Fire 5. Honestly I use all three still. I love them all for different reasons. But if I had to choose based on ease of use and usefulness I would go with Kobo….

@Denice the Fire is great until you want to read it outside. I use mine for sourcing books, but I’m really loving my Paperwhite. I filled my first one, now I’ve got a new 8g one. It’s a tad OTT having 4 Kindles ☺️☺️☺️

@Janice lol. 4 is a bit much. I have 2. I use the 2nd generation as well. I haven’t tried the Paperwhite.

I love my Kindle Paperwhite. I also like it syncs with all devices/apps so if I’m reading a book on one device and I’m out and find I have time to read on my phone, I can open up the Kindle app and boom, it goes right to the spot I left off at. I don’t know if Kobo has anything like that too, but, I’m also a Prime member so you get extra benefits of the Prime Reading library (can check out 10 books at a time), I get one free book a month with Amazon First Reads, and for being a Kindle owner you can check out one book a month for free from the Kindle Owners Lending Library.

Kindle is way better. Kobo is the leading brand in Europe and some of my friends had 2/3/4 kobo’s with problems within a 2 year time frame.
(Screen freezing, bad battery life) More and more are using Kindle (and taking the extra step converting from ePub to mobi for granted)
In the Netherlands you get a kobo for free with a magazine subscription… all those Kobo’s are refurbished… how does a company that makes a high quality product get that many refurbished items??? Exactly.. the quality is not what it should be..

And then there’s this..

@Dorine I have a Kobo and so many problems! The screen freeze, the battery life slowly getting bad. And don’t even get me started on problems faced while reading adobe digital editions ??

0
Dorine

@Nita so sorry to hear this…
Normally I’m a ‘every brand has it’s advantages’ type. Sometimes it’s quality vs price… sometimes it’s preference for a certain feature… but with Kobo ???
If I mention the problems they have in a Dutch fb group everyone gets defensive… ‘well my kobo is still working’ ‘I had the last model for 2,5 years’… guys…. my friends with kindles sometimes are disappointed they won’t break down because they would like the excuse to buy a newer model…

And to be honest.. I would like a kobo myself.. to be able to get the Dutch/kobo version of kindle unlimited… but I’ll wait until they’re up to par

0
Nita

@Dorine Want their Kindle to breakdown because they want a new model ??
Being too good is not that great hehe.
Yaa everything has pros and cons and for Kobo I just see one that is you can read epub formats with Kobo.

0
Dorine

@Nita , I always have the wrong format .. thanks to a certain Mr. Murphy..
reading Dutch and English and using a Kindle and iBooks…it seems that everytime I buy a book I prefer to read it on it’s format counterpart.

Luckily calibre is always there to save the day …
