For me it would depend on the book, but then I’ve bought books before because the authors have been on history or true crime documentaries

Highly unlikely !

@Ayo interesting. Why is that?

Mainly because I find out information about the books that I am likely to read from publishers catalogues and websites. I might look at what they saying to see what people think of the book and views but certainly would not influence me to buy a book.

@Ayo oh, I see.
I’m the same, I get pre publication copies of lots of books, I also get The Bookseller magazine which is great for finding out about new releases
Quite often though I’ll miss a book and I’ve bought a few based on reviews from people such as Jake Kerridge and Barry Forshaw

Unlikely to buy but likely to check it out and read a preview.

I think any exposure helps. Having your book featured in a magazine or newspaper isn’t going to automatically translate to sales, but it helps spread the word about the author and the title. And at some later date, the person who saw the feature might say, ‘Hey, I’ve heard of that book or that author’, and possibly push the buy button.

It will sometimes make me look for reviews and then I might make a judgement.

All these book clubs are now defunct, unfortunately. They were informative and good value.

Very likely, even now I blog. I buy the Times every Saturday and Sunday and read the book reviews and often buy books I’ve seen in there that have somehow passed me by. My Mam buys lots of books she sees in magazines like Good Housekeeping and the Sainsbury’s Magazine. She totally ignores my blog and only buys if recommended in a magazine ??.

I used to be swayed by journalists’ book reviews, but now I’m more likely to be impressed by readers’ reviews on Amazon.

@Helen quite often those ‘journalist ‘ reviews are posted on Amazon too

The closest I came to that was when I was at the Doctors’. I picked up a magazine and read an article about Julian Clary, and his experiences after moving in to what had once been Noel Coward’s house. The house inspired him to write ‘Briefs Encountered’, which I downloaded to my Kindle when I got home. A few years later I asked @Oliver what he’d done with Julian Clary when he’d moved his characters into the same house in ‘He Made Me’.?

I don’t tend to buy mags or papers now, but I would read and buy occasionally when I did get them. Now it’s online reviews from book bloggers or promotions on social media.

I tend to go by suggestions on this and other pages I follow these days, as well as Amazon readers reviews. I will always remember going to work one morning in the 90s and hearing Sarah Kennedy on her radio 2 morning show enthuse about The Bone Collector by Jeffrey Deever. I bought it and since have bought everything he’s published without reading any blurb. Never been disappointed.

I always used to listen to Sarah Kennedy and thought she was a brilliant presenter and so funny. I identified with her cat stories as I have always kept cats. She and Terry Wogan each morning were a wonderful start to the day.

It depends on the magazine

@Jan which magazine do you prefer and why does it depend on which one? Just interested

I was once removed from a publisher’s mailing list for a 3* review in a magazine B| Not naming the mag or the book – it was a long time ago – but it made me smile.

But how is that connected to the magazine choice?

advertising by publishers

AnneQuestion author

@Jan Sorry, I don’t follow. I’m talking about book reviews in the media, not adverts

I really don’t buy books or magazines (only Writer Mag lol). If I have to I watch the news on TV or go via the Internet. Have never even considered reading book reviews in online news sites. I assume they do them that way? The few mags I’ve flicked through whilst at the hairdressers I don’t think I’ve ever bought a book off it. I’m more likely to have taken my kindle with me and would be reading that lol

It broadens the book’s reach. I’ve bought books I otherwise might not have heard about, but they were in a magazine.
