Is it any good?

Interesting question. I’m 77, and I read it when I was about 14. Would imagine it’s very dated now. B

Not really, as it is historical anyway and the language is, I believe, fairly true to the times, it doesn’t really show its age.

I can’t remember, I think I read it in school

wasn’t the divine George Sanders in the movie version? and some dope like Linda Darnell as Amber?

My mother told me that when she was a young teenager, the librarian wouldnt let her check this book out…too risqué. This would have been early 1940s.

That’s what I remember also.

I just looked it up and will consider putting it on hold as soon as I catch up on my goodreads 2017 reading challenge… it’s 972 pages!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Right now I’m reading as many books as I can under 200 pages. I googled that and made a list. Hope it’s not cheating because I am reading books I never would have chosen to read and really liking them!!!!!

The problem with reading challenges…..

Polly

True…but some of the books I’m being (self)pressured to read are quite interesting, broadening my reading horizons!!!!! =)

I think I would like reading challenges related to pages read because it’s less limiting. Sometimes a really fat book comes along that I just can’t wait to read.

Polly

Yes! A PAGE challenge!!!! I like that. Instead of top last year’s number of BOOKS, go with increasing the number of PAGES read!!! Let’s tell that to the goodreads powers that be!!!!!! =D

It seems to me that there are fewer “really fat books” these days. ?

Sally Stephens Leech have you read The Name of the Wind (662 pages) Wise Man’s Fear (994 pages) – books 1 and 2 of The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfus? It’s epic fantasy and it’s awesome…(only) if you like that kind of stuff!!!!!!! Those were my first “really fat books” and I was so proud of myself! And I loved them. Any other Rothfuss fans out there??? <3

Polly, I must admit I have never heard of this series. Unfortunately our library doesn’t carry them and – dare I admit this to this group? – I am not really a book buyer. Gasp!

No gasps here!!! I get most all my books from the library these days or from my California book buddy.(We exchange a couple of books monthly!) I’m older! So downsizing. Decluttering. Not getting RID of books (ok, a gasp goes here!!!) but not buying more.

@Polly I read The Name of the Wind and enjoyed it. I have yet to read the 2nd book. I also try to read mostly from the library. I read a lot so I can’t afford to buy all of the books I read.

I read it as a teen and have very fond memories. Not sure if it would hold up for me, but I know it contributed to my love of romance novels. My other two favorites from that time in my life are Katherine by Anya Seton and Desiree by Annemarie Selinko.

I read it when I was a teen. Really fostered a love of historical fiction! I don’t know if it would be as riveting now.

I read it at 14 and was riveted – of course, at that age, – and decided to re-read it recently and in that wonderful way about books it was still riveting to me but in entirely new ways – dive in! It’s a delight and I couldn’t put it down once again!

I read it several times in my teens and twenties and later. I probably still have my tattered copy.

I enjoyed it at age 17 but don’t know if I would now at 63.

I read it when I was sixteen. It had 622 pages so it was my first fat book. My English teacher had a list of books to read from so I picked some little book because I just wanted to read Forever Amber. She took me aside and asked why because she knew my love of reading. I told her and she told me to absolutely read it instead. I loved it back then but I’m 66 now. Maybe one day I’ll try again.
