Awful. That series should have been written in crayon.
Love the expression ..written in crayon…
I read the first book up to chapter 4, then consigned it to the bin. Dreadful writing.
Glad I’m not the only one, my Brain could not handle how poorly written it is
The over use of discriptive words to pad out the weak storyline is an insult to the people who paid money to buy it.
For whatever reason, this book does not entice me although it is hyped by most of my friends it doesn’t seem like my cup of tea per say.
I started to read it because of the hype surrounding it, wished I hadn’t bothered.
The writing is dreadful.
I felt like whatever plot there could have been in all three stories was rushed through and underdeveloped to get to all of the gasping. Ugh.
I do not consider that to be a book or indeed, having anything to do with literature. The subject, rather interesting as such, was neither explored nor analysed. Total and utter rubbish, waste of time and money.
I couldn’t finish the series as it was just so poorly written. On the plus side though, these books got people reading again which is always a good thing.
Love the Gray series. Usually takes me a month to read a book. I have a very busy life. Took me a week to read each book. Couldn’t put it down. Which says something because I hate the soft porn crap whether it’s in books or on tv.
However, at least with the other reviews mine is an unpopular opinion… But where I’m from ALOT of ppl love it.
Terrible writing as if I’m too stupid to understand words – she first tells me and then explains what she tells me…..???
Read them all in 2 weeks, I really enjoyed them lol
I agree… We are apparently the unpopular opinion so far in this thread though
Meh don’t care I loved them haha
The films are rubbish in comparison tho
Right? Like I feel every woman’s first time should be like Anna’s. If every woman’s first time was like hers I feel like women would hold men to a bit of a higher standard than they are.
And yes the movies sucked in comparison.
The films are rushed .. I felt the same when I read the twilight series.. watched the film and was like “hey they skipped bits” .. never makes sense once you read a series of books that are made into films
Omg they missed so much and definitely rushed what they did put in the movie. Some complain about the explaining in the books… But I felt like the explaining just made the books so much more better.
Definitely.. I even had my other half read them once I’d finished.. he loved them too ???
Lol, my husband couldn’t have cared less about them. He’s a western guy or a sports guy…. But I did get him to read a few select parts of the books TO me in his raspy deep voice 😉 lol
Excellent ?
It was crap
Amazing series! Loved all of them! Read all three books in two days!
Yay another lover! Only 3 of us so far
I haven’t read them BUT based on the mixed reviews it seems that if you are an avid reader and read a lot of high quality literature to compare 50 shades to, you wont like it. If the book concept intrigues you, and you are more interested in the plot than the writing style then I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. I haven’t read all that much as I’m a slow reader and I’m sure I would enjoy the books.
I read a lot of high quality literature and still love fifty shades. It isn’t about the “quality” of what you read. ?♀️
That might be the case. I love the Gray series…. I also love classic literature. But I love books in general. The type or the writing style doesn’t bother me. As long as it’s a book and in English, I will read it and usually love it.
Not necessarily.. I’m a huge fan of the bronte sisters, Charles dickens and Jane Austen aswell as historical .. I like a wide range of reads and enjoyed both sides x
@Kayla yep but some people just can’t get past the writing style and that’s probably why they don’t enjoy 50 shades
True
@Cassi I just meant if you read a lot AND writing style is important to you then you likely might not be a fan, that’s all.
Twilight fan fiction …. I used to be crazy about the series but it got old fast.
It’s fanfiction of Twilight. Enough said.
Terrible
Awful.
You want a real book in this genre get “Don’t Come” from @Jessica. Amazing! Great plot and even better writing. On KU as well.
It’s all awful.
A lot of people also don’t like it because of what it’s about…. So I mean definitely gotta be open to reading about it if your going to like it.
However, please don’t choose to not read the book because of others negative opinions of it. The ONLY way your going to know if you like a book is by reading it yourself.
Not my favorite series
I have no objection to the storyline or the subject matter, my problem is the awful writing.
Precisely
I actually liked the series.
If you’ve read the others, you might as well read it. The writing was very repetitive and all of the books could’ve been edited down about 1/3.
Terribly written but if it does the trick and u don’t take it as a bible for bdsm ( terrible representation of the community ) then it’s cool
Loved all three books
It’s twilight fan fiction. Enough said ?
I’ll say it’s kind of a guilty pleasure even though she has BDSM completely wrong and he’s actually rather abusing.
Didn’t think it was well written at all, didn’t get the hype, from a psychological standpoint it’s interesting but yeah didn’t like it and the movies are worse
Loved the trilogy.
I actually enjoyed the series.
Worst writing ever. Couldn’t finish reading.
It was spicy and entertaining, I wasn”t really into the theme.
I personally thought they got better as they went on. Freed is definitely the best of the three!
Terrible. Ugh. I read them all because yeah but please don’t let it fool you that he isn’t an abusive, controlling ass who doesn’t deserve the title of Dom.
Ugh. So whiney.
I seriously can’t believe she got a movie deal! So many other amazing series out there that need a movie! Hated it.
It was “ok” I have 100% without question read better but I’ve also read worse.
I read them to see what all the hype was about & I don’t really understand it ?♀️
This little discussion just reflects on the phenomenon of this series. Totally unworthy thing, but it got all of us talking, one cannot deny that 🙂
Hated it … so monotonous and boring . Couldn’t wait to finish it !!! .
Can’t get my head round why it’s acceptable for porn to be mainstream when, if it had been written by and mainly read by men there’d have been a massive outcry about it. Doesn’t sit well with me at all and I’m not a prude just find the hypocrisy breathtaking
I tried to read it but it was so badly written I just couldn’t do it. I’m also not into abuse so it’s definitely not for me.
If this dude lived in a trailer and was dirt poor in Louisiana somewhere he’d get arrested.?
And just a disclaimer- nothing against the state of Louisiana, love it There! And I’ve lived in a trailer. Just saying if he wasn’t loaded he’d be in cuffs not her.
Why? She was a consenting adult.
@Liorah it’s a joke, and the books were porn. I’m allowed to have an opinion.
Too many books out there to give this series the time of day.
Story was good bit the writing was atrocious!
Absolutely loved the series!
Loved them!
I read them when I was 15 and thought they were pretty good I’m now almost 20 and I personally wouldn’t read them again I’m not a fan of the writing at all anymore but the books shes written that are from Christians perspective in my opinion are better written and I’d choose to read them over the original versions but it’s all about personal preference
Poorly written trash! It’s shocking that 3 films have been made out of them. Don’t waste your time!
Utter shite. Couldn’t see what all the fuss was about
I was never tempted all I heard was bad reviews I can’t read anything badly written.
When my college students would ask me if I’d read Fifty Shades, I would tell them I was too young. ?(I’m old enough to be their grandmother.)
So badly written , I didn’t enjoy them sorry
Perpetuates rape culture and badly written!!
How?
Absolutely not rape culture
Agreed. It’s all consensual
No it isn’t!
https://articles.al.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2015/02/lines_from_50_shades_of_grey_t.amp
It is not rape and yes it us consensual..
@Beth what the hell is the matter with you. No one insulted you. You’re not worth my time. Enjoy your ignorance.
Educate yourself what rape is.
An absolute pile of rubbish films are just as bad
Garbage
Not book club worthy material. Trash.
I loved it
Anytime I ask for book recommendations, I am very adamant about refusing to read the 50 Shades series. That and the Twilight trilogy ?
There’s 4 books in the Twilight series
Lol see? I don’t even know how many books there are in that series, that’s how little I paid attention to it ?
50 Shades of Shite. Sorry.
You just said what I’m and I’m sure others are thinking ???
I made it through the first four pages of book one.
Try the @If trilogy
Haven’t read or watched it not my bag
I prefer the crossfire series to the 50 shades books. The story was ok but wasn’t great, read all 3 books but not read them again.
I like a good murder mystery
Me too..we obviously share more than just great names! ?
Sent friend request had to be done lol
So bad. I think it was aimed at bored housewives and people that had never picked up a book before ?
Absolute rubbish very badly written
Very, very bad writing.
Tripe.?
I mean… I read the series but I like the books more than the movies.
I read the 3 of them, If you ignore the repetition and dont mind erotica you will like them. I felt book 2 and 3 had much more story than just sex.
It is a book that splits loads of camps. If you enjoyed the first you will like this, dont let others put you off xxx
I wouldn’t even pick the book up let alone read it….Not my cup of tea..there are far more exciting books out there to read…
The series is marmite.
exactly this. There are many books that aren’t for me but I would never slate a person for it. The ugliness this book brings out in fellow bookworms is disappointing. We should be happy folk are reading not using it as a reason to be nasty. xxx
@Llainy Agreed. I read the 3 books. Not the best but definitely entertaining.
Each to their own, I say.?
@Liorah I had to read them when everyone was talking about it. Too nosey and feart of missing out. My God. I was mortified, had to google some stuff, more embarrassment but I had to read them. Seen the movies with the girls too, they love it. Was disappointed with movie 3 that had the most story and so much was cut or rushed xxx
@Llainy I saw the first 2 movies and felt the same. They skipped a lot of the plot to squish it into the time slot.
People are making too much fuss about it all. I’ve read worse.
couldn’t be bothered to read any of it.
Read the first one, hated it. Never bothered with the rest.
I downloaded a sample of the first book, and laughed at how horribly written it was. Got through maybe 15 pages. If it wasn’t for the subject matter, I’d think it was written by an 8-year-old. Definitely didn’t download the whole book.
I dont see the point. It has no literary value. It serves only to titillate. At least, that is my opinion based on the first novel. If this book is substantially better, I am happy to be corrected.
I may be in the minority here, but it just seems…everyone hates on 50 Shades because it’s 50 Shades. Yes, it’s no literary thought-provoking masterpiece, but if you like cool sex stories and fantasize about getting tied up by a sexy overprotective billionaire and want a simple read, go for it. I actually enjoyed them. Don’t let people put you off because they think it’s just terrible writing..if it’s a style you like to read, then give it a chance.
I agree. 50 Shades is one of the most hated books, and even by people who haven’t read them, which is pretty unfair in my opinion.
I read all three back when they were pretty new and I didn’t mind the writing at all. I had never read erotica before and was pretty shocked at first but didn’t find it tantalizing at all. After the first book, I just started skipping the sex scenes to get to the story, and yes, there is actually quite a bit of story unlike some of the erotica that’s out there. I’ve read a couple erotica since then that was so explicit it makes 50 Shades look about as tame as a Victorian ball. ? No the writing isn’t a masterpiece, but it was fun at the time. I don’t love them but I thought they were okay.
Also, these books are pure wish fulfillment novels (ie a hot billionaire falls in love with you) and are meant to just be a fantasy. They don’t have to be realistic or even accurate, they are fictional entertainment and nothing more.
The movies were stupid but I enjoyed the books.
The books were enjoyable. I have read better books with more captivating stories than 50 shades, but read it due to all the hype.
Not true to the BDSM culture and perpetuates rape culture. The books and movies made me uncomfortable.
Beth Anne which bit endorsed rape? They were consenting adults. She wanted what he was offering.
@Liorah you obviously know nothing of the community, which, in the scene where he’s taking his aggression out on her, and she’s crying… is absolutely fucked up, and perpetuates rape CULTURE. Do some research.
This is exactly what I put…and got shot down!!
I’ve been told to educate myself on what rape is….!!!
I liked them all. They were better then the movies.
It’s a book, it’s fiction, I loved them all!!!
I love the series, and have to laugh at people saying it’s badly written well it was never gonna be Shakespeare, and I’ve read worse. I guess people don’t like the hype around it. These books got people who wouldn’t normally pick up a book reading and that’s always a good thing
It was great I loved all the books it’s less sexual then the other two but still great
I can recommend Jenny Trout’s dissection of all three books if you want to know what they’re like without having to read them (each chapter has its own blog post and detailed breakdown) http://jennytrout.com/?p=3208
Lol this is the funniest thing I have read in a long time ???
Yes
Bad writing
I was so embarrassed to read this book in public. It’s just basically a porn book.
Still a well written book and series.
I have read all of them including as told by Christian and love them all
I don’t laugh at anyone’s opinion on a particular book as books are subjective to the reader. Though I don’t expect every book to be written using the language of Shakespeare I don’t expect authors to be lazy with their writing.
Best of the trilogy
I tried the first book a couple months ago and as much as I wanted to like the series, I just couldn’t get into it. I wasn’t a fan of the writing itself.
Couldn’t get passed the first book. I didn’t find the plot very interesting ( or lack of a strong plot).
Agreed! Along with that was very poor attempt at character development.
I read all three and then tried to read the last one written from Christian’s perspective. They were ok. An easy read but repetitive and unrealistic. I mean ready for work in 4 minutes – c’mon and weekends which lasted more like 2 weeks…..but an ok read just the same. Couldn’t get into the last one, it was just the books rewritten. Hope you enjoy them xx
Not interested in the mentality that keeps being pressed on is that we are all voyeurs and peeping Tom’s and want to watch people in their bedrooms. Gives me the creeps.
Erotica is porn end of .
So? What’s wrong with porn? I don’t read erotica, but I watch porn. Who cares what others do?
I am entitled to my opinion and won’t engage in an argument about it. I don’t have to answer to you.
I loved the series, couldn’t put it down, but it might not be for everyone
Read the first one, very naughty lol. Not read the ones after as I’ve been told there very samey xx
Badly written but couldn’t put it down! ?
I personal thought they were terrible. I had to force myself to read the first two couldn’t read the last.
Seems like people either love or hate this series no in between feelings
I really enjoyed the series. I know the writing wasn’t great, however, I enjoyed the characters. I’m interested in reading Gray and his POV series.
The only book series I have ever read then put straight in the recycling bin immediately after finishing the last page of the 3rd book. I wanted to read all 3 because they were so massively hyped. I found them so shockingly badly written and cringeworthy. I thought the “suspense” plot she tried to write in the third book was appallingly lame but everyone has their own opinion. Ages since I debated this series though. It would be very boring if every reader only read and liked the same books. #wasnotworthit
:/
I read all three that is the best. I didn’t read the Christian’s perspective one. They did the same thing with the divergent series and twilight.
Wouldn’t touch the crap with a barge pole!!
People have very strong opinions that’s for sure. I loved all 3. She wrote them as fanfare for Twilight which I also devoured. Ofcourse I scoffed the Twilight series until a friend loaned me a copy and only because I had nothing else to read…..i picked it up and loved every moment. Enjoy! Xoxo xoxo
Yeah and we only know this because she got in trouble for copyright, since she used the same exact names, then had to go back and change them. SMFH.
I didn’t like the books. Nothing wrong with X scenes. But X scenes should always be equal to or less of the normal scenes. Too much is too much. I’m not here to read a porn. I do like the movies since the X scenes are toned down A LOT.
But due note. The Author got in copyright trouble for this series. She made it a fan fiction from Twilight and used the same exact names. You can tell the Author is not a real Author. That was quite tacky if you ask me.
I read them and thought they were repeative. They were ok.
I just couldn’t do it.
Started the first one and couldnt get into it. Badly written.
Gag. Lol ?
Read all three but wasn’t all that impressed by them. I enjoy the first one and thought the next few would be good as well but they fell short for me. They almost felt too cliche.
Meh…never finished reading it and I like reading hardcore books but I lost interest
Exactly meh is the word read them out of curiosity when they first came out the last one is probably the best one and the one with the least saucy bits but just not that well written.
You might want to check out my Fifty Shades Of Green Or Coffeehouse Confessions of the Uncommon Joe and its sequel. You can check it out @http://judithsessler.com/
I’ve started skipping over the sex scenes because it’s repetitive and a little much for me, but the first book ended in a way that I wanted to know what was next. I’m liking the second book better than the first and will start the third this weekend.
Yes. Read it. It finished the story! It was ok. I enjoyed the series and I like a happy ending.
read the 1st, 2nd and 1/4 of the 3rd, didn’t care for any of them and not interested in the 4th…
I read the first two. Haven’t been motivated to continue. Lol.
