Awful. That series should have been written in crayon.

I read the first book up to chapter 4, then consigned it to the bin. Dreadful writing.

Glad I’m not the only one, my Brain could not handle how poorly written it is

2
Sharron

The over use of discriptive words to pad out the weak storyline is an insult to the people who paid money to buy it.

3
Şʮị

For whatever reason, this book does not entice me although it is hyped by most of my friends it doesn’t seem like my cup of tea per say.

2
Reply
Sharron

I started to read it because of the hype surrounding it, wished I hadn’t bothered.

2
Debby

The writing is dreadful.

4
Carrie

I felt like whatever plot there could have been in all three stories was rushed through and underdeveloped to get to all of the gasping. Ugh.

2
Reply
Marina

I do not consider that to be a book or indeed, having anything to do with literature. The subject, rather interesting as such, was neither explored nor analysed. Total and utter rubbish, waste of time and money.

I couldn’t finish the series as it was just so poorly written. On the plus side though, these books got people reading again which is always a good thing.

Love the Gray series. Usually takes me a month to read a book. I have a very busy life. Took me a week to read each book. Couldn’t put it down. Which says something because I hate the soft porn crap whether it’s in books or on tv.

However, at least with the other reviews mine is an unpopular opinion… But where I’m from ALOT of ppl love it.

Terrible writing as if I’m too stupid to understand words – she first tells me and then explains what she tells me…..???

I agree… We are apparently the unpopular opinion so far in this thread though

1
Kayla

Meh don’t care I loved them haha

0
Kayla

The films are rubbish in comparison tho

1
Jenna

Right? Like I feel every woman’s first time should be like Anna’s. If every woman’s first time was like hers I feel like women would hold men to a bit of a higher standard than they are.

1
Jenna

And yes the movies sucked in comparison.

1
Kayla

The films are rushed .. I felt the same when I read the twilight series.. watched the film and was like “hey they skipped bits” .. never makes sense once you read a series of books that are made into films

0
Jenna

Omg they missed so much and definitely rushed what they did put in the movie. Some complain about the explaining in the books… But I felt like the explaining just made the books so much more better.

1
Kayla

Definitely.. I even had my other half read them once I’d finished.. he loved them too ???

0
Jenna

Lol, my husband couldn’t have cared less about them. He’s a western guy or a sports guy…. But I did get him to read a few select parts of the books TO me in his raspy deep voice 😉 lol

I haven’t read them BUT based on the mixed reviews it seems that if you are an avid reader and read a lot of high quality literature to compare 50 shades to, you wont like it. If the book concept intrigues you, and you are more interested in the plot than the writing style then I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. I haven’t read all that much as I’m a slow reader and I’m sure I would enjoy the books.

0
Reply
Cassi

I read a lot of high quality literature and still love fifty shades. It isn’t about the “quality” of what you read. ?‍♀️

1
Jenna

That might be the case. I love the Gray series…. I also love classic literature. But I love books in general. The type or the writing style doesn’t bother me. As long as it’s a book and in English, I will read it and usually love it.

1
Kayla

Not necessarily.. I’m a huge fan of the bronte sisters, Charles dickens and Jane Austen aswell as historical .. I like a wide range of reads and enjoyed both sides x

0
Shivi

@Kayla yep but some people just can’t get past the writing style and that’s probably why they don’t enjoy 50 shades

1
Kayla

True

0
Shivi

@Cassi I just meant if you read a lot AND writing style is important to you then you likely might not be a fan, that’s all.

A lot of people also don’t like it because of what it’s about…. So I mean definitely gotta be open to reading about it if your going to like it.

However, please don’t choose to not read the book because of others negative opinions of it. The ONLY way your going to know if you like a book is by reading it yourself.

Can’t get my head round why it’s acceptable for porn to be mainstream when, if it had been written by and mainly read by men there’d have been a massive outcry about it. Doesn’t sit well with me at all and I’m not a prude just find the hypocrisy breathtaking

exactly this. There are many books that aren’t for me but I would never slate a person for it. The ugliness this book brings out in fellow bookworms is disappointing. We should be happy folk are reading not using it as a reason to be nasty. xxx

2
Liorah

@Llainy Agreed. I read the 3 books. Not the best but definitely entertaining.
Each to their own, I say.?

2
Llainy

@Liorah I had to read them when everyone was talking about it. Too nosey and feart of missing out. My God. I was mortified, had to google some stuff, more embarrassment but I had to read them. Seen the movies with the girls too, they love it. Was disappointed with movie 3 that had the most story and so much was cut or rushed xxx

1
Liorah

@Llainy I saw the first 2 movies and felt the same. They skipped a lot of the plot to squish it into the time slot.
People are making too much fuss about it all. I’ve read worse.

I downloaded a sample of the first book, and laughed at how horribly written it was. Got through maybe 15 pages. If it wasn’t for the subject matter, I’d think it was written by an 8-year-old. Definitely didn’t download the whole book.

1

I dont see the point. It has no literary value. It serves only to titillate. At least, that is my opinion based on the first novel. If this book is substantially better, I am happy to be corrected.

0

Stephanie

I may be in the minority here, but it just seems…everyone hates on 50 Shades because it’s 50 Shades. Yes, it’s no literary thought-provoking masterpiece, but if you like cool sex stories and fantasize about getting tied up by a sexy overprotective billionaire and want a simple read, go for it. I actually enjoyed them. Don’t let people put you off because they think it’s just terrible writing..if it’s a style you like to read, then give it a chance.

6
Reply
Laura

I agree. 50 Shades is one of the most hated books, and even by people who haven’t read them, which is pretty unfair in my opinion.

3
Laura

I read all three back when they were pretty new and I didn’t mind the writing at all. I had never read erotica before and was pretty shocked at first but didn’t find it tantalizing at all. After the first book, I just started skipping the sex scenes to get to the story, and yes, there is actually quite a bit of story unlike some of the erotica that’s out there. I’ve read a couple erotica since then that was so explicit it makes 50 Shades look about as tame as a Victorian ball. ? No the writing isn’t a masterpiece, but it was fun at the time. I don’t love them but I thought they were okay.
Also, these books are pure wish fulfillment novels (ie a hot billionaire falls in love with you) and are meant to just be a fantasy. They don’t have to be realistic or even accurate, they are fictional entertainment and nothing more.

Beth Anne which bit endorsed rape? They were consenting adults. She wanted what he was offering.

1

@Liorah you obviously know nothing of the community, which, in the scene where he’s taking his aggression out on her, and she’s crying… is absolutely fucked up, and perpetuates rape CULTURE. Do some research.

I read all three and then tried to read the last one written from Christian’s perspective. They were ok. An easy read but repetitive and unrealistic. The only book series I have ever read then put straight in the recycling bin immediately after finishing the last page of the 3rd book. I wanted to read all 3 because they were so massively hyped. I found them so shockingly badly written and cringeworthy. I thought the “suspense” plot she tried to write in the third book was appallingly lame but everyone has their own opinion. Ages since I debated this series though. It would be very boring if every reader only read and liked the same books. #wasnotworthit

Yeah and we only know this because she got in trouble for copyright, since she used the same exact names, then had to go back and change them. SMFH.

0

I didn’t like the books. Nothing wrong with X scenes. But X scenes should always be equal to or less of the normal scenes. Too much is too much. I’m not here to read a porn. I do like the movies since the X scenes are toned down A LOT.
