Warning: I’m tipsy and salty. Anita Blake vampire hunter. I know there are still unhealthy things present, and nothing is safe from the love triangle, not even love triangles, but it’s really really refreshing to see none of that big possessive jealous male rapes innocent virgin into love scenario. And no destined one true love. I also liked the one where vampires are descendants of some aggressive alien race, it makes little sense but the books were pretty good. Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed. I was told it’s like the Black Dagger Brotherhood, but I don’t know (nor care), from a light unremarkable paranormal romance with strange vampire background it grew into a decent series. And the winner in the destined mates / rape romance / toxic AF monogamy / unhealthy patterns category: Immortals after Dark. It drives me mad whenever I read a big man being verbally abusive to their female because love, I have fantasized about slapping Kresley Cole with a huge pink dildo every time a warrior woman enjoys being overpowered, and I was tempted to throw the book through the room the last time one was just uncharacteristically childish. But they are great, the actual main character is fracking awesome, and I see foreshadowing and connections and little details matching in books, some of the couples are just the best, and the worldbuilding keeps me hooked.
To be fair, Kresley Cole’s women were also often weirdly adversarial to begin with – like, I found it tedious. But then, yes, it got weird with the overpowering.
I got halfway through the first book and wasn’t sure what vibe the author was going for? Like, is this romance? Comedy? Family drama? Where is this going? I anticipate going back, but I wasn’t intrigued enough to keep going for the moment.
They are really good books once you get into them.. ive read every single one up until the newest one so far.. they are always about a different family member too…
@Beth like I said, I think I’ll go back. I didn’t dislike them, I think it just wasn’t what I was expecting and not the vibe I was looking for at the time.
@Britt it’s a bit different, I find I have to read and then take a break because I find them all very similar to each other but i found I enjoyed them ? if you go ba k and think of it, let me know what you think.
