It’s been many, many years since I’ve read a YA book. I didn’t read them much when I was a YA! ? I’m not sure if this qualifies, but I loved “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret.”
“Tessa Masterson Will Go to Prom” by Emily Franklin (Lucas and Tessa have been BFFs since childhood. Their whole town takes it for granted when Lucas asks Tessa to senior prom – in billboard-size style. Then Tessa drops a bomb: she’s gay. And she’s taking her secret girlfriend to prom. Lucas is hurt and angry. And when their small, conservative town unite to keep Tessa out of prom, he has to decide if friendship is more important than his pride.)
@Graham Probably not. I read it back in the early ’90’s and it caused a lot of controversy due to the themes of sexuality and drug abuse But I would still recommend it to most young adults.
