LOTR may not have been completely accurate but it was by far the best adaptation of a book that I have ever seen! I just don’t think it could have got any closer to what I imagined for the entire series!!! They truly caught the EPIC adventure and characters perfectly IMO…

Yeah I thought the adaptation was really great about staying close to the source material. And the movies are definitely epic.

I thought they did the story pretty accurately. It’s been about 15 years since I read the books but there isnt much left out, maybe the tom bombadle chapter but besides that I cant recall

I really liked the MTV series for Shannara. Bit lame? Sure. But it was a fun. Best one I’ve seen? I mean theres 0 comparison to LOTR. Literally no other fantasy series has been brought to live acting media on its scale. American Gods was fun too

It took me a couple tries to get the Shannara series started but I’m with you yet a little cheesy but it was okay. I didn’t actually hate it when I finally got going on it. I really liked American Gods as well. Can’t wait for the next season on that one.

Never watched the Shannara series. Might check it out just to see for myself.

Totally agreed. Was blew away with 1st season of shannara. Had never heard of the book before that, well never took the time to read demo at least. 2nd season not so much. To……. twilightish in the 2nd season. Love American gods. Also love the magicians. Except for the character changes to the gay guy in tv show. He was not gay in book and was quite awesome. I like the tv character too but he doesn’t have the kingly qualities I saw in book character. Would love to see any Sanderson series or demon cycle as 1hour dramas. Maybe powdermages too

Seriously? The Shannara series was absolutely terrible. Absolutely threw all the lore and story out the window. The world did look amazing, but that’s about it. MTV really sexed it up with shit loads of teenage angst and absolutely terrible music. I don’t understand how anyone who invested the time in reading the books could enjoy the TV adaption. And considering Brookes had a hell of a lot of input to the series I definitely expected more. It is not true to the books in the slightest. They had so much stick from the fans after the first series that they decided not to follow the books at all for the second series and did an in between elf stones and wishsong storyline. Tried that series too and it was even worse. Each to their own, but I don’t get how anyone who’s read them could possibly enjoy the series. Shockingly bad!

Though nothing like the stories by Robert E. Howard, I really dig Conan the Barbarian. I’m also a pretty big fan of the Black Cauldron books and 80’s Disney movie.

@Joseph The Solomon Kane film is way better, imho.

Joseph

I’m talking the 80s Conan movie, and I DID like Solomon Kane… even though that’s not too like the source material either.

Elijah

@Joseph I think they were both trying to be origin stories. I thought the SK made more sense in that regard, and I really liked James Purefoy’s performance.

That said, the Black Cauldron is pretty badass/underrated.

Yes! Yes it is!

@Joseph was a sad day when I found out that they cancelled the third movie in the installment. To have seen Arnie get his crown and kingdom…?
I wish they had made it. Wouldn’t be the same with a different actor.

Joseph

I agree! There was talk a couple years ago of maybe doing it… but still nothing.

I liked The Stand!

That really was a darn good miniseries… and even more fantastic book.

@Kathy they’re making a new one.

Minko

What about storm of the century that was great

1
Joseph

That wasn’t based on a book, though. He just wrote the screenplay.

@Joseph aha aha

@Joseph , the book by Steven King came first!

Joseph

For Storm of the Century? It wasn’t ever a book. There is a screenplay out, though.

1
Joseph

Unless we’re talking about the stand, in which case I know the novel came first.

Kathy

@Joseph, you’re right!

Wizard of Oz and the princess bride. Also really enjoyed the Conan (Arnold Schwarzenegger) movies, and red Sonja.

Red Sonja was so bad it was GREAT.

@Joseph that’s the only way to describe it.

Though not strictly fantasy, I loved the first Dune. Kyle McLaughlin will always be Paul to me. (Even though Sting was awful in it. )

Game of Thrones for sure! Trueblood was good until they stopped following the books. I really enjoyed Bitten, Outlander, Shadow Hunters, The Strain,The Magicians are really good. The Vampire Diaries was way better than the books I think lol

I forgot about trueblood. I loved Lafayettes character for the show and glad they kept him and didn’t kill him off like in the book. However I still haven’t seen the last season so not sure in the show who sookie ends up with, but in the books that was the biggest let down for me. But I like your choices!

0
Amber

Yes! Omg I loved Lafayette!!! In the book he was kinda blah, but the show Nelsan Ellis fabulously brought him to life. He was definitely one of my top 5 fav characters. I was so sad to hear of his passing, he was an amazing actor ?

The show honestly ended waaaay worse than the books for me. The last few seasons were so crappy and how the made Bill a fricking God, like come TF on! So dumb lol. And how they all ended up in that government facility ???. Do you want to know who she ends up with?

0
Nope

Yes, please tell me. I don’t think I will ever finish watching it. And I had no idea he passed away. That’s so sad.

0
Amber

Yeah I know right. He was so young too! He died of heart failure last year if I’m remembering correctly.

Sookie ended up with a fricking nobody! Just some rando dude who’s never been on the show and you didnt even get to see his face really! At the very end it showed her pregnant with kids running around and everyone still alive (no pun intended ??‍♀️) at the end at of the series in a backyard dinner. Sam would’ve been a way better option I think, or Eric ?.
Oh and she mercied Bill too!!! He was dying from a disease that the radicals ppl put in the Trueblood and he was dying and he asked her to stake him in his grave ?

This is the last few mins

Wow really. That sounds awful. I thought in the show maybe they would of made her end up with another fairy or some thing supernatural but I guess we don’t see anymore of her lovers that she goes through. I was really hoping in the books that she would of ened up with Eric. Sam was okay, but I just didn’t feel like there relationship was built or written for that type of love, if that makes any sense.

0
Amber

Yes, omg I wish she would’ve ended up with Eric in both! And it totally makes sense cause in both the series and the show they had such chemistry that you think they would’ve ended up together. Her with Sam was just a mish mash to me cause they’d known each other for so long it just seemed the “thing to do”, where as Eric there was passion and fun.
Hell even another supe would’ve been better or Alcide had they not killed him off would’ve been better than some rando, or Quinn if they’d used his character in the show finale. I thoroughly enjoyed the bald headed muscular weretiger in the series and I was annoyed when they didn’t have him on TB, yet the created others who weren’t even in the series. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Jessica’s and Jesus, but I think Diantha, that demon lawyer or Quinn would’ve been been way cooler to have in the show. But ya def in the books and show it was a super disappointing finish ☹

What just kills me about the final scene and who Sookie ended up with though is that its a fantasy/supernatural show! It was just so blah boring to end it that way ?. If something like that happens with Game of Thrones I sincerely think there will be riots and anarchy in the streets lol

Nope

Alcid dies? What?!?… I liked him in the show but hated him in the book. Well that’s so disappointing. Now I have to watch the last season to see. What a let down. Thanks for letting me know what happens. I haven’t thought much about it since it’s been over for so long..lol

0
Amber

Among others yeah he dies ?. Sooo many ppl die the last season and that’s when you knew they werent coming back for another season.
And yeah same for me too. His character in the books was okay but the show made him way better, same with Eric ?. Who BTW doesn’t die like they made it seem he did at the end of season 6. I dont know how you could not finish the last season after a finale like that with Jim burning in the mountains lol. I would’ve gone crazy not knowing if he lived or died ?. I rewatched it last year and omg it’s so cheesy watching it years later, but I still enjoyed it. I was and am still annoyed with the last few seasons, but whatez, I have Midnight Texas now ?

We ended up moving overseas which ment bye bye to cable tv. Had to wait for the season to come boot on dvd. So missed it and never got around to finishing it. But now being back in the States I should be able to pull it up. I’ll have to watch to see who all dies now in the show. It’s been so long since I watched them.

LOTR and Narnia (for TLTWTW especially).

I think I enjoyed Stardust as a movie more than the book… but it may have been because I saw the movie first.
